I'm trying to encourage my horse's mane to grow. When he arrived it had mostly been rubbed out by his rugs and I have only owned him since August but it is growing so very slowly... does anyone have any products that they use to help encourage mane growth?

He is an Appaloosa x Connie and despite him being part appy, half his mane seems quite full (I would post a photo but I haven't a clue how) :D

He's currently rocking a mohawk as well (looks very daft)... so if anyone has any tips to make it lie flat I would be very grateful!

Somebody had near enough hogged my highland when I bought him. I just used shed loads of mane and tail, oil tax along with a nylon/silky lined neck rug. Took forverrrr.. Then came the plaits to make it lie the correct side.

I've heard of folks using some sort of hoof tar can't quite remember the name but what a blooming mess that would be!

Oooh thank-you! I love a highland!!!

Yeah, I've heard of rubbing Cornucrescine in before, but with him being a Grey few spot... I daren't hahahaha.

Eek! I've used Cornucrescine on bald spots from cuts before but can't imagine the mess in a mane :D

Almost certain the hair in those spots grew back black for a few seasons, too (she's bay..!)

Only thing I've ever found to work is patience and binning the neck rugs.

Could always try caffeine shampoo? Don't know if it works on humans but maybe worth a shot?
I'd agree with floxie to bin the neck rugs but my boy was out in a group on thugs who liked to groom and bite away most of the middle section of his mane!

The best tip I can give you is not to brush it. You'll avoid broken hairs. The makers of mtg claim that using it on the roots help main/ tail growth. I haven't used it for that purpose so I don't know it's true.

You could always try regaine. If it's good enough for bald humans, why not horses :D

Thanks everyone! I think it's just going to be a case of time and patience (patience that I don't have...)

Can anyone give me an idiots guide onto how to upload a photo...? hahahaha!

My husband bought an Appaloosa x TB. She has a very thick mane but it just doesn't grow longer than a few inches and sticks straight up. It won't lie flat or grow for love nor money. The best he could do was change her name from Jo to Mo. Mohawk, in fact. He has come to love the advantages of this type of mane as 'brushing' it consists of using the palm of his hand to smooth it from forelock (short and stubby) to wither and marvelling at it bouncing straight back up again.

Maybe I should get him some tartan accessories and just work with my punk? He's got the attitude to match after all..

coconut oil! and lots of it, the cold pressed kind. Rub it between your fingers and massage it in. works fantastically. gives the hair a lovely shine too.

JoBaz caffeine shampoo and conditioner, it's about £2 a bottle and it does work. And a fraction of the price of the likes of Regain or the one with the long name that you need a mortgage to buy.

And ditch the neck rugs :)
