but why do eventers put a little square of masking tape on the horse's nose? I'm watching Mary King at Badminton on Horse & Country TV, and her horse has this, as do some of the others I've seen. Is it to stop the flash noseband from rubbing or something?

Its usually to open the nostrils like those anti snoring stips you can get for people. So its to help them breath more easily during xc. Hope that helps not a stupisd question at all
 
Not a stupid question at all! I know how it is supposed to work, but have never been able to work out how on earth it does - bearing in mind the anatomy of a horse, vs a small piece of tape......

V puzzled, please can I take up your offer Mrs M??? Might help calm the confusion.
