We can't all be the fountain of all horsey knowledge so I'll risk the shocked and horrified responses and ask anyway...

It's to do with martingales and pelhams.

Long story but Sam is a bugger to jump because he throws his head in the air and tanks into them. Have tried a multitude of bits (had everything checked, he's fine and we have gone right back to basics etc) as I need to have some degree of control. Have finally found £100s later that a simple old Pelham that has been sat in my tack box all along is doing the trick.

Have previously jumped him in a running martingale to try and keep his head down but have taken in off since using the Pelham (as using it with 2 reins).

He still manages to get his head right up in the air when he wants to tank into a jump- should I put the martingale back on or is that a real no no with double reins/Pelham????

Yes I know it sounds awful strapping him down with all this stuff (I even carry a stick too

) but he has learnt to take the mick and he needs showing who is boss in the short term and I need to be able to have that control.

Sorry to be an ignorant cow... something tells me I need to choose one or the other?

Nothing wrong with using a pelham and a running martingale together. Make sure you put the rings on the top rein and you'll be fine.

If it works then do it. If it makes him safer and easier to handle then surely its better than constantly fighting him.
There is no rule to say they cant be used together.

Absolutely you can, just not on the curb rein

You can also use one with roundings, like hundreds of ponies everywhere LOL!

I do own some roundings but have kept to two reins so far as I don't find them hard to manage and I can use the bit more to my advantage- ie use it when I need it lol!

Keep using two reins!! I amazed how many people (grown up people) can't be bothered to learn how to use a bit that's designed to be used with two reins. Or how many pro's don't seem to bother, gags especially irritate me..

Good for you for using two reins!! I dont like roundings with a martingale personally as it does act on the curb rein. But I do understand when children have to do this. But as growed up peeps we need to do it proply!!

Two reins with a martingale on the snaffle rein is ok. I used to do this for hunting and team chases/ cc rides etc. Certainly think it is kinder than a snaffle if your horse is a tanker offer!!!

I absolutely have to say that yes, I would recommend 2 reins over roundings any day of the week - BUT in some circumstances roundings are easier for some people (hunting and XC to say 2) and you CAN use a running martingale when using roundings if you need to.

how about instead of useing double reids useing leather D rings and just a single rein?

im not to sure if its the same pressure but ive tried to help!
