Hunter trials are usually held by a hunt, and cross-country is usually held in an ode, or 3de, not usually on it's own. I probably confused you sorry

a hunter trial where we are is just a xc course really!! With a timed section etc!

XC refers to the x-country element of an event. A ODE contains xc as well as dressage and sj. A hunter trial just contains xc

Traditionally a hunter trials includes opening and shutting a gate whereas cross country doesn't.
