Advice please? Bolshy big horse; lived the life of riley and seemingly complains when asked to a) come away from friends b) remain stabled for any length of time c) hack out d) do anything in the arena when he decides he doesn’t want to, to the extent that he will put himself and his rider at risk (this has happened a couple of times now) if he gets it into his head that this will allow him to be swiftly put back out with his buddies (ie WIN!) which he has been allowed to do often enough for him to have the session ‘sussed’ every time. Despite this, he actually is a nice horse; when he goes well he really goes well. With the right, confident and capable jockey he could do just about anything! The question is would you try and sell privately (not a lot of plus factors to go on) or go straight down the dealer route? Are good homes an issue when dealers sell? I can’t imagine anything would be vetted and would presume any Tom, Dick or Harry with a full wallet could just take him? I would argue private but just want some opinions to feed back with regards to selling through dealers - NOT MY ANIMAL so please no know-it-alls stating the obvious, that the problems shouldn’t have been allowed to get out of hand in the first instance. Thanks a lot!

Surely it would be much more beneficial to the horse and owner to get the horse professionally schooled and then sold? A Trainer that actually knows what they are doing shouldn't take much time at all to sort a problem like this which just boils down to manners more than anything :)

A good dealer probably wouldnt want him the other type may give peanuts for him and not care where he ends up.
Have they considered sending him for schooling or sale livery? If he is removed from his home environment does he behave?
He could be a different horse in a new yard with a proper routine it would be worth trying to give him a chance, you dont say how old he is as this could make a difference to his future prospects.

Thanks, local dealer said they would take it (I must add for a lot less than what it would be advertised at) I really don’t think the owner has the time or resources to have it re schooled before a sale sadly. It is a case of must go. The owner simply wants a good home for him – my argument is that going to a dealer will most likely not result in that? Especially taking into account the animals behaviour.

Can the problem be mostely rectified (with a good rider) before he's sold on?

I suppose it really depends if the horse has a particular talant as such, depsite any bad points (big, bolshy...not for the faint hearted type of ride), but if an experianced rider or competition dealing yard can see there is actually something there (the horse has a talant) then they will decide if its worth their while working through the other issues as time is money and at the end of the day, dealers are in it to make profit so don't expect them to give you much for him.

All you can do is contact as many as you can and invite them over to see what they think, how much they would offer you or if you can afford to send him off to boot camp where he can be worked and put into routine where he's not going to find it easy to get his own way, or sales a livery?

gosh it has been ages since I have been on here!! Well I know what you are going though I have a horse that you may have descirbed to a tea and I have manged to turn him around it has been a long road but there is light at the end of the tunel. My new horse was so bad when I got him I could not get on him and to be fair I knew he was bad and I would not ever pay for a horse like that and I did not he was given to me or he was going to end up somewhere terrible. The best thing to do is DO NOT turn it out with another horse, work him in a routine lunge him before you get on and take it slowly. Moose would try to kill whoever he was on him but we are now jumping and everything.

I write a blog on him for the dressage comminity in the USA here is a link to the blog and if you scroll back you can see it from the begining. Maybe if you gave this to the owner it would help. The problem is if he goes into a dealers yard he may never find a home. Moose would have definately ended up in horsey heven if I did not have him and to be honest I have worked really hard and we are getting there!!!!
