My daughter's horse was freezemarked last saturday. I have had several horses and ponies done before without any problems at all but something is not quite right this time. The actual mark itself is fine but below it there is a significant swelling. It is about 20cm across and 15 cm deep at its widest/deepest points and it is raised by about 1cm. It is an irregular shape. Yesterday it was a soft swelling today it is much harder and it has expanded. It is not noticeably hot nor does it seem to cause any serious discomfort but I certainly would not want to put a saddle on it. Daughter is hoping to be able to ride at weekend (i.e after the seven days they recommend) but this swelling is causing some concern. Has anyone experienced anything similar after freezemarking and does anyone have any bright ideas as to what we might do to try to reduce the swelling?

I had my boy done the Saturday before last. The day after being done he had a really pronounced swelling but quite small area wise. Over the next few days the swelling reduced in height but got larger in area as though it was expanding/dispersing under the skin. He was also quite tender where the actual brand was done.

I just gave him some bute to help with the pain and swelling but didn't ride him until yesterday (so basically 10 days off).

Hope yours is better soon.

Which company would you recommend? Not answering you call doesn't sound a very good advert for one of them.

I had my grey ISH freezemarked on the shoulder a few years ago and hers initially just swelled where the letters were:

But then her whole shoulder swelled up around the freezemark after around 5 days to the point I felt unable to ride her incase the girth / saddle touched a sore spot. Mine was done in summer so I cold hosed and gave her some danilon. From memory she had 2 weeks off ridden work in total.

You can just about see here the last of the swelling

My mare is very sensitive and allergic to some lotions and potions. I didn't think too much of it at the time other than she just had a bit of a bad reaction to it being that she is a big fairy!!

Swelling is quite normal and it can take two to three weeks in some cases to go down. If you are worried contact your vet. Out of interest which company did you use Farmkey or Freezemark?
