I have been asked to ask you guys what you this may be as my friend cant get on HHO at the moment.

She has just got a new horse, TB I think, and when he is stood still his back legs twitch and quiver. She has said he's perfectly sound to ride but just isnt sure why he is doing this? Does anyone have an idea?

Sounds like shivers. Mine has shivers but they're very mild so the only thing I struggle with is picking back legs up/picking out back feet. He only quivers when he's very excited or tense, not normally when just standing around. Doesn't bother me in the slightest but then again, it's not a bad case.

My farrier says he shoes some Grade A SJers who shiver quite badly but it doesn't affect their performance.

Could be number of things that could exhibit the same signs, I'm thinking if its a TB (and possibly and more so if its an ex racer) they do sometimes get the odd backend quivers, due to excitement or being a little tense when bringing in and tacking up, as they know what coming next, its not necessarily shivers.

However it could be, if so and he's sound, mild shivers won't be a problem, if you friend has the horse on trial, with view to buy, then it may be in your friends and the horses best interests to have it confirmed by the vet.

We have a number of ex race horses on the yard - and P2P's in training. I've never seen any of them exhibit this type of behaviour through excitement.

Well that's good but maybe none of them on your yard do it, I was just making a point that some of them do and it's not always shivers, I guess it depends how much the horse is doing it and when, which is something we can't see.

Mine (IDxTB though, not ex racer) does it when he's excited, but it may be related to his shivers anyway. Half of our yard are P2P and race horses (maybe 18 horses) and I've seen some of those do it.

Never had this problem with any of my TB's and one was an exracer too. Not sure what hers is, but apparently he's stopped now but has been twitching and quiverying non stop all afternoon and has been doing this since the first day she's had him. He also doesnt have any back shoes on.

Can she found out what farrier the owner uses, he'd be a good person to ask.
