I have nearly always suffered from back trouble but just recently it is worse. I have a very weak sacroliac(sp) joint which just pops in and out when it wants

The other day I had to ride with one stirrup longer than the other BUT by the end of the session I had to put it back again. It seems while riding my back had put it self right again. very odd anyone else have similar problems??

I am going to see my chiro on Wednesday as I am also struggling inpain when I try to sit to the canter atm which I don't normally have a problem with.

Trouble with going to chiro is he can put it back but moments later it can go again and I am getting fed up of it

I have the opposite - back is fine when I ride it is the rest of the time, particularly at night, that mine hurts!

I think most of us crazy horse people have back problems!
I have seen a chiro and osteopath over the years and i had the same experience, chiro would only fix me for a day or two.
I found the osteopath much more helpful as she gave me lots of exercises to do and i haven't needed any more sessions for a long while!

Same as Worried1, if I do not ride my bad kills me!! Try strengthening "core stability" muscles which can help. Not just abs but deep muscles... ie. pilates etc can help...know its boring to do but has good results!

Try a serola strap? It's a back support but it goes round the hips instead of the waist to support the sacro iliac joint. My sacro iliac joint's totally wrecked from getting rolled on when I was 13. Google for it - they should be around £25. Word of warning - get the size you are rather than the size you'd like to be cos the sizes are on the tiny side...

Also I had v good results with a Heather Moffatt seatbone saver. They take all the jarring out of riding, even sitting trot, and are now BD legal if they're the same colour as the saddle.

Mine is bad, combination of a twisted pelvis and a broken hip a couple of years ago that never healed properly. I know I sit slightly twisted and have given up trying to fight with that, and a proper seatbone saver helps. I can't sit properly to a canter though and have to kind of 'hover' a bit.

Today was my 1st day back riding after a week off with a bad back. It was so bad last day that I could not stand upright or walk properly for 3 days and did not leave the house for 5 days!

I am suffering at the moment too...I had it coming on a while, not sure why but then I rode one day last week and completely messed it all up..I could not sit or stand afterwards and spent the day before my physio appointment crying in pain! I would totally recommend acupuncture and physio together...it really helps. The problem is not usually the actual back but the muscles and structures around it that tighten and go into spasm over time and then pull your spine out of line. Once the muscles have been relaxed again and straightened out...everything is fine. It really works for me and whilst I have been pretty uncomfortable this weekend and forbidden to do my usual activities, I know that when I have another appt tomorrow I will be nearly there if not sorted...and it lasts full stop...it is usually because I overdo it that it flares up again.

I have found a gell seat pad helps and when I am hacking, I perch when in canter to avoid jarring my spine.

I have problems with my back - my sacroilliac joint especially and I find that a Prolite back support helps. Also, I have a fit ball that I do core stability exercises on which help a lot.

Do you find it better if you ride without stirrups? I only ask because sometimes we brace against our stirrups which sends tension up the legs and into the back. This is something I used to have trouble with and I now have those 'flexi' stirrups that move in all directions. That combined with raising and lowering your heel slightly a few times if you feel that you are getting tight has made a huge difference to me. Don't know if that'd be any use to you but good luck!

Yep bad back for years after popping it when trying to load a horse.....off for a year (well walking on horses that was all I could do), then it was ok but always ached, it aches permanantly worse after jumping or schooling, get stuck when I am putting studs in for prolonged time, always wear back support for competing and studding up.....just live with it really.....I think if I actually had it checked out again they would tell me to give up....

im only 21 and i get a sore back on and off horses, it depends on what sort of ride we go on and how long for. ive never got a sore back on my own boy but its certain types of horses that bring it on. (if that makes sense!) my friends tb give me back ache, im no longer used to bouncy horses owning a cob!!!
