To be honest I have only claimed once with them. It was a third party claim when Monty mullered a parked car (little scamp lol ). They paid out really quickly and it was really easy. What's the situation??
Cutting a long story short. My horse was ill and they settled the vets fees straight away but refused to pay loss of use. I have been to the ombudsman who has backed my case and asked them to enforce their 3rd vet part of their terms and conditions and i still await. Its now been 15 months since the start of the claim. The annoying part is that they have not yet even looked at the Vets report, x-rays or scintigraphy results? yet are refusing loss of use.
They have paid out on numerous claims whilst I was with them and also humane destruction payment upon death of horse. NFU are much cheaper and have paid out on lots of claims and death of subsequent two horses. Would just like to add that although this makes me sound a very bad owner but all deaths/accidents were unrelated and none were my fault - just been very unlucky.
NFU also offer a bonus discount every year based on their yearly profits as they have no shareholders so any money they make gets passed on to their customers by way of discount on policy premiums. First class.
The only bad story I heard about Petplan was someone up the yard had a pony that was having problems. Vet wanted to send it for bone scan, and Petplan said they would only pay out if the bone scan came back with a problem!! They just didn't have the money to gamble like that so pony ended up as companion... Ridiculous.
I have had no problems with Petplan. I have had to claim on three
separate occasions and for each thing they have paid up quickly and kept me informed. My pony went for a bone scan and they agreed to pay all costs.
Only gripe i do have is that each time i have claimed, my claims have continued over my renewal period of the insurance. Which because i had current claims outstanding and knowing i had to stay where i was to get my full years cover for that particular problem, they have hiked my premium up some what each year!! I pay ridiculous amount for my insurance each month.
But then hey ho.. its all comparative really seeing as by time my current claim finishes they would have paid out nearly 15k on my horse over the past 4 years. (sounds bad i know, but i was just unlucky!) Money i couldn't possibly afford. And they have paid out without any questions asked.
petplan have been absolutley brilliant for me. they have paid out all claims with no problems. only thing they didnt pay was the sum insured amount when one of my ponies was pts
What reason did they give you for not paying LOU? They do have a referral Vet that they use who usually speaks to your Vet about it so it may be that they have a difference of opinion?
Hi I used Pet Plan about ten years ago , they paid my vets fees but would not pay out £800 when pony pts, they even asked for a post mortem after pony had been cremated, (we had warned them that pony might not make it chronic laminitus ), you had to wait ten days before contacting them after submitting your claim, they also failed to pay my disposal costs despite it being included in my policy and paying for it on my premium. In my opinion they pay the vets no problem, but not the client. Sorry for the rant but it still makes me upset!
Hi, ive had real problems with petplan, wouldn't pay out on my horses kissings spine x-rays, (even thought they confirmed on the phone that they would) they said it was because 18 months previously the vet had on his notes that he had just seen the physio for his back, (have horses back checked twice a year by physio) they said i hadn't informed them i had the physio out! Um don't most people have their horses backs checked routinely? Anyway i have now cancelled my policy with them because there are so many exclusions that its just not worth it. One of his legs is excluded because he had a cut on it once that needed anti biotics?!
Really wouldn't recommend them.
Im having a nightmare too. I claimed for vets bills and LOU last November it went to referal vet then back to my vet then loss adjuster and now back to my vet. We haven't had anything back not even the initial vets bills or physio which we were told they would pay over the phone...
do NOT get me started!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i have just this evening been given the ombusman number!
my poor horse has been suffering for 5 months and they have only just told me on friday to PTS which my vet requested months ago however i cannot go into it at the moment due to legal reasons but let me tell you that i am sure every horse owner will hear about my story very soon!!! they are *************************************
thanks for the rant!!!!! p.s. cruelty issues have been raised!!!
I have made 2 claims with them and to be fair they have paid out both times. The sedond time however I did have to jump through a few hoops before they would pay out. Other horse is with NFU and have never had a problem with them at all - they have been brilliant. Any horses I have in the future will be insured with NFU.
