I'm fairly new to the showing world, i have only been competing for a year but have had my own horses for over 20 years. I recently bought a young horse who is currently at a well known professionals yard for breaking and schooling and is to be shown under saddle by them this season. My question is what shows can they compete at? Can they compete at local level or do they go straight into affiliated and county level? tia :)

Likely straight into affiliated but there is nothing stopping a pro taking a young horse local level for education.

Do remember if you want to ride yourself later in the season you will not be able to do the amateur classes.

Thank you for your reply. I wonder what the rules were to professionals riding at local level because it doesn't seem fair to me but i suppose all horses have to start somewhere. Yes I'm aware of not being able to compete at the amateur classes but does this mean i could not show at novice level also?

You could ride him in open novice classes at County level and you can also ride him in any class open or novice at riding club/local level. Do check the rules on novice classes at local level, many will say open to horses never having been placed first.

As AA says above, covers much of your questions :)

Ref pro's riding at local shows, unless there are rules in place at the show, then its open to all comers.
We used to take green novices out to local shows to learn their job, at the start or end of a season, even when they were already entered for county shows & qualifiers.
Everyone has to start somewhere - even the equines :)

Same as eventing/SJ/Dressage - upper end riders will still attend some of the local events to take the youngsters out :)

That said, as a producer, I used to detest local shows due to either very odd judging, or people lacking spacial awareness or manners. The county cicuit was on the whole a much safer place to go to! :D
