Well, as title really...

Got a little scrap at home and to cut a long story short, he seems to have a rear end mobility problem...sadly.

Over the past 2 weeks he had taken to sitting like a Dog for about 45 seconds before he actually manages to push himself up..
then last wednesday i noticed he had "patella fixation" of the off leg after getting up and also sticking trying to trot away when playing...

anyhow, as vet was coming for one of the others, he had a looky...and said i have 2 choices...
in his opinion, the "patella fixation" is something he may grow out of, as weak youngsters are prone to it as we know, its the unknown that may, or may not, be going on with his hocks and pelvis that he's more concerned about.....

so the 2 choices are, obviously PTS or stick him out in the back field and see what happens......

He is a "sell-on"...a scrap i picked up for a very small amount of money..a tiny little shetland x..and a colt.

He would cost me Zilch to keep over the winter TBH....but the question is still there...
what to do if next spring doesnt ring the prefered outcome?

Poor little mite...
I think I would chuck out for the winter/spring and see what the future brings.
You can PTS now, but if he doesn't cost you much to keep and is not in distress, I would give it a go - you can always PTS in 6 months.

I'm with ^^^. If he's not in pain, not costing you boball to keep (odd vet check in passing apart), then give him a chance over the winter - see what spring brings.

But you know me, Last Chance Saloon a speciality. Gawd knows what it will be like when we do get moved...

My shetland has this...
He also sits like a dog for around 30 secs before he manages to get up, and has a slipping paetlla problem in his back legs.
Vet said as he's not in pain and still very young give him a year and re asses again next year. He'll only ever be a companion, which is fine by me and doesnt cost much to look after, but if things start to get worse, or he is in any pain i will have to think again. Its horrible

I think I would give him the winter too JM but with very careful monitoring. If he starts to get worse then PTS rather than give yourself a time frame. It may be that being so tiny he will take a while to tighten and strengthen but this could be a congenital weakness with him being bred so small.

You've had ponies with issues that you have given them some time at grass to see if they come right before, haven't you JM? So I'm not really sure why you have posted what looks like a question here?

You seem to want to keep him over winter and reassess in spring. If no better sadly the choice may have to come to PTS, but you've been here before with others.

Give him the chance, you've got nothing to lose and he's got everything to gain...

JM07 i know you and i know u will do what u feel is the right thing to do,doesnt matter what anyone else thinks, the only person that knows him truley is you.

Good luck with him if u keep him hun xx

Is it sticky stifle? They grow out of it, if that's what he has and the more exercise the better. Not sure how it applies to tinies, though, workwise.

Aw, JM, he costs nowt to see through the winter, so at least give him that. Or are you *ahem* attached to him in some way
