Firstly, thank you for Hermans birthday wishes! He got lots of new presents (downside of running a pet shop, I think), 3 of which are already reduced to soggy rags. *sigh* I suppose he likes the ripping bit and at least it's toys and not clothes....

Today, I decided to take him sort of round FiLs fields, but to get to them we had to go through the park = lots of dogs. In theory, we only actually MET one.

She was lovely, a nice little lab and when I said Herman wasn't great about dogs approaching him on the lead, she chased after her, grabbed her and said 'she only wants to play, she thinks everyone does', which is the same as Herman. I said Herman played rough but apparently Bonnie liked that best(!) and said she didn't mind if I took him off the lead. Had sort of misgivings (you aren't meant to play with every dog!!) but took him off, thinking we'd meet loads. They played for a bit and (progress?) I recalled him away from her 3 times. Did put him back on the lead though to go away from her.

Second bit of progress, which I'm more (?) about is while up on the fields, off lead, walked round a corner and came face to face with a deer. First time Herman has seen one, I think. It ran, as did Herman. Shouted him back - nothing, called him, squeaked, made silly noises, nothing. They had gone round another corner (to set the scene, slightly, to our left was a big open rolled field, to our right a wood, with broken down wire fencing and post & rail a bit further round) and I could see the deer going through the woods. Panicked cos they rear pheasants in there and Herman and I would be in Deep Deep Deep Trouble if Herman had gone in chasing.

Raced round the next corner to see Herman galloping back *phew* Praised him to the skies and back, gave him lots of treats and ran round a bit with him, then walked back down the hill to the footpath. He kept looking back for the deer but stayed with me.

So do I count that as a recall off a running deer or not? He could quite easily have gone in after it, but he didn't come straight back when I called. But he DID come back!

Saw some other dogs while he was back on the lead but they were further up ahead from us and apart from some whinging that lasted about 3 seconds, ignored them.

I'd love to know how long the walk was, cos he's knackered now. I got an iphone for my birthday (2 days before Hermans, technically he was my 30th birthday present, but OH got me the phone too, yes, I completely accept I am a spoilt little cow) and have downloaded a pedometer app. Guess which fool forgot to press start? *bash*

So, carry on being proud or work harder next time?

I would definitely call it progress. Okay in an ideal world you would have been able to stop him from chasing the deer but in your shoes I would be pleased he came back reasonably quickly. I had a similar scenario with Evie the other week, a fox jumped up on front of us, she chased it across the field and into the wood totally ignoring me, but did then stop and after a bit of deliberation came back to me. Not perfect I know but I was very pleased with her.

I'd call that progress for definite.

He didn't disappear for 30 mins (!) and for his first time on a deer that is quite impressive.
I've called mine off hares and pheasants after a short chase and off cats from a standstill (the fact that both cats have boxed his ears may have helped :p).
He will still give sheep a really good look and a prance but he won't try and pull me towards them any more!!!

It depends what type of dog he is - some think 'If I execute this behaviour, X will happen' another will think 'If I don't execute this behaviour, Y will happen'.
I have actually seen B on several occasions stop, look at me, look in the direction a hare went, look back at me, weigh it up!

It's a matter of trying to overide their natural, sometimes very strong urge to chase, with making them believe you are the font of all things good and the harbinger of doom all rolled into one :p

SO pleased you all think it's progress too, I was starting to doubt him as there was a fence into the woods (albeit down) but he could have gone over/through it so easily and he didn't. Am highly relieved though that the deer went into the woods and not down the field - can't decide whether he would have come back so quickly then. He is a bit of a mummys boy and it does panic him when he suddenly realises I'm not right behind him and he had gone round 2 blind corners.

What's the betting he goes looking for it tomorrow?! Hopefully we won't find any fun labs to play with tomorrow too.

He's fine with my cats at home (the Siamese hates him and tells him so, frequently and the Norwegian plays with him - it is so CUTE to watch him chase Elmo, then Elmo spin round and chase him, Elmo even knows how to ask him to play the way Herman does, ie, bash the front paws about) but I'm not sure I'd trust him outside with a cat. Not 100% anyway. And I can recall him off birds - they were superfun till he realised they can fly and thus ungettable LOL.

I still haven't found the elusive 'I want THAT treat' yet. Sausages are mainly ok and cheese is also a favourite (Double Gloucester is the best), but gravy bones get spat out, as do biscrok, some own brand semi moist things we do, ham he thinks about taking then usually wanders off.... I did make some liver fudge once which he seemed to like but the smell was horrific.... When we move back home I might make him some more *puke*

Tuna is good, or Chorizo (slightly high is best :p) and I know I sound contraditory but normal packaged ham is just full of salt, filler and water usually, so not that high-value for a dog.
I can see why they do not find things like biscrok etc appealing also. Have you tried chicken bits?

Liver is something they go mad for, as you have noted, it is worth the smell!!!

And don't forget to fast him or half ration for brekkie. It isn't cruel, you are just feeding him at a different time, with different (usually much yummier) food in a different way.
Rather a slightly hungry dog than a squashed one because he followed a small furry under the wheels of an artic :p

I can only ditto what the others have said, definitely something to be proud over.

About the treats, have you tried black pudding? I knew someone who used pieces of pancakes as treats and I don't know why, but my Lapphunds, especially Jonna, will do anything for a potato. If she gets a piece of meat in her feed bowl, together with a piece of potato, probably 9 out of 10 times, she will eat the potato first.

 :)
