We had to rush my youngster to the vet hospital last night with a massive nosebleed. They localized the bleeding as coming from the sinus area and think it is most likely progressive ethmoidal haematoma. They've led us to understand that if it's that, the long-term prognosis isn't great - anyone have any experience of this?

Ethmoid Haematomas can be operated on but there is a risk of massive haemorrhage. There is also a risk if they are not operated on so it depends on whether you decide to give the surgery a go or not. I have assisted in a few and they are very bloody and the horses have had transfusions during the op but have recovered ok.

OK, thanks for the info. Still waiting for a confirmed diagnosis, but it's definitely from the sinus area and there's no evidence of facial trauma and she's only just five so tumour doesn't seem as likely as the haematoma.
