Ok, so my sister in a hurry to buy a horse for our new field bought a 'project horse' that she thought she could work on over winter and sell on in the spring. I didn't really want her to go ahead and buy this horse as I knew she didn't have time to school it or look after him over winter. After doing join up and some light schooling she got on him and he threw her off. She got on again and he was fine. The following week she got on again and he went into a bronco act and bucked her off good and proper!
Well now she has decided she's not getting on him again and wants to sell him asap.
I knew this was a bad idea from day one as here I am stuck with the horse who won't be caught and can't be ridden. I have just had major surgery so there's no way on this earth I am getting on him.
She's tried advertising him and being brutally honest but despite loads of e-mail interest she's had no-one view him. I don't want to put him through the trauma of a dealer as he's a lovely looking chap and I don't want him passed from pillar to post. But I have to be sensible and I know that my sister will leave his care to me over the winter and I have enough with my own mare and pony who are well behaved but I don't want the hassle of dealing with that little swine as well!!
He has to go and I mean asap but we have to do the right thing and tell people he bucks so he might need re-backing and no-one wants to take this on over winter.

Any suggesions anyone????
Has anyone had this problem before and what did they do??

We had one like this, not worth risking your neck over IMHO.
Th options are to find a gnuine pro who can work with it- this will prob be quite expensive. To try to re-home, being very open about his probs or to have him PTS.

I have a friend who has been doing the equine ethology course for the last 2 years in France and USA. I'm hoping she's back in the UK now and I know she can probably sort him out but time is an issue here. I don't have the time to look after a problem horse over winter and I just wish my sister had thought of that before buying him. Having him PTS would not be an option for us personally. I'm sure he'll come good with time and PTS seems a bit harsh!

ha ha sounds just like what i just brought!!
If shes not willing to put the time, effort and pain herself could he go to be rebroken, reschooled etc at a trainer or yard?
What sort of horse is he... not that i can take another "project horse"... just remember no such thing as a bad horse!
Also how much you asking for him? and how much you buy in for? Sorry little nosiey just interested as like i said just brought a similar horse.

Well he's already being passed from pillar to post and just because he looks lovely doen't mean he should be treated any differently to an ugly horse. I would advertise him at a sensible price - very cheap and you should sell him, you need to think how much is it worth to you not to have to do him all winter.

I suppose he could be sent away but I know she's not got the funds to do that (I know-she should have thought of the money before buying him!!). He's a welsh D Cob, chestnut (!!), 8 years old. She paid £850 for him and just wants that back. It's obvious he lacks confidence and probably wasn't backed properly in the beginning. I suspect he was used more as a driving pony than ridden, wonder why!!???

I agree, I just meant that it's not his looks that are putting people off, I didn't mean that just coz he's handsome I wouldn't PTS, I wouldn't do that even if he was ugly it's just not the way I do things. I agree that advertising him cheap is the way to go and would save the winter keep costs, at the end of the day its not really my problem, it's my sisters, she wants back what she paid for him but that'll be a miracle if anyone pays £850 for him!!

i take it shes had his back teeth and tack all checked out? if not that would definately be my first port of call - imo horses dont buck for no reasons, whether they are purely scared or in pain. i know some are just nasty, but id eliminate all these factors first.

could you not give him away to the right home through Project horses?

Since he's been OK ridden before I assumed his back and teeth were OK but I will suggest she has them checked just in case. She can't afford to give him away as she paid £850 for him.

Where have you advertised? Have you tried H&H, Horsemart. Horse DEals etc. They seem to have professional riders. Also have she had his back etc checked out?

I payed £2500 for a horse very similar the owners were VERY VERY honsted but i knew he just hadnt been backed, or broken simpley ridden. He was up for £5250 but because i look him a week later and they were in a rush to get him out thier yard i picked him up dirt cheap. £850 shouldnt be to hard to get. How long has he been for sale for? Could i have a link to his advert?

well if were on the subject of project horses - anyone willing to give my lovely girl a home!! I'd call her a 'project horse' simply because she needs to be brought back into work slowly after a sacriolic injury. She is 16.1 DWxTB bay mare, 7yrs, very pretty looking, been shown inhand and jumped at home. Has Be My Guest and Renkum Arturo bloodlines. Can have a small attitude problem but nothing a patient rider/handler can't work with. I'm not asking much just enough to cover myself - if she was in proper work for her age she'd be work easily double - £17-1500

Can you change you add a bit? You haqven't got what age/height etc - is he registered?

Drop the price below £1k as you'll take £850 it looks better. Advertise him in H&H in the under £1000 section - its pretty cheap and you get a colour advert.

Personally I'd take Vicjcp's offer.

Good point, I'll tell my sister to amend the advert and try H&H as well, cheers.

She hasn't had his back or teeth checked as she has ridden him and he was fine but has now decided he wants out!! I suspect he was never backed properly and needs re-starting or he's done more driving that riding. We always use treeless saddles with the correct pads so no reason to suspect the saddle is the problem. We have someone finally coming to look this weekend but she can't take him til end of November if she decides to have him. Have you had a look at the link to his advert? He will make someone a super horse who has the time, patience and experience to get him trained up. There's no maliciousness in his behaviour I get the impression its more of a confidence issue and simply a lack of understanding in whats being asked of him...
If you're willing to make an offer then please PM me...
