Hey all,

I'm looking for a nice english hunter bridle that has a lovely thick noseband. Can anyone recommend one?

It's to go on this boy

The thickest noseband you'll get 'off the peg' is 1 1/2 inches max. Anything thicker will need to be custom orders/made.

I have a beautiful 2" noseband custom made from a saddler off ebay. It cost me £30 inc P&P. The whole bridle would have been about £70, which is excellent value for a custom made enlish leather.

Kallibear who do you use on ebay?

I have bought a Robinsons bridle and don't rate the leather that much i'm sorry. I'm going to buy a Fylde as I like the fact you can choose the width of all the bridle pieces . :)

Having shown hunters for years I have yet to see a 'off the peg' bridle that I would rave over. I am afraid the £11.00 and £40.00 bridles would worry me in terms of longevity and safety.

The bridle on the lovely coloured cob is not a hunter bridle, the cheek pieces look to be only half inch leather and look out of balance with the noseband.

If you want a bridle to last, compliment the horses head and fit well have it made to measure. That way you can get the buckles in a line, have the loops on the browband made big enough to take a slip head, thereby making a snaffle into a double and have the reins made from the same hide.

I have several bridles that would be 20 years old now absolutely beautiful bits of kit, all hand stitched with 3 lines of stitching. Well worth the saving up for.

I guess it is down to what you want to do with the horse at the end of the day, but if you are planning to hunt him I guarantee your cheap bridle will rot and fall apart after it has been coated in sweat and rain for a while.

Issaccs Saddlery, Worcestershire make bespoke bridlework well worth having.

Adorablealice: my coloured? The cheeks on Pips bridle are 3/4" and handstitched english leather with white thread. Annoyingly they're too long and I really need to replace with cob sized :( His fluffy forelock makes everything look out of proportion. Looks very workman like when hogged.
