My 3 yr old filly has a rather large one on her neck. Obviously, I knew it was there when I bought her, and is no issue to me, however....

It has been suggested to me by a couple of people at my yard that I should show her....never REALLY crossed my mind, and I had no visions of grandure when I bought her.....but maybe it would be fun?!

So, what I really wanted to know is, will her thumb mark go against her in the show ring? I'm thinking it probably would? Like I say, it would be for fun anyhow, but would like to be prepared should we take the plunge and partakein a class or 2!!:D

Thanks

Claire.x.

I wouldn't have thought so. I show my boy and he has 2 and it's never gone against him! It's supposedly a sign of luck :)

Ah go for it!!! It's not a conformational fault it's how the horse moves carries itself and it's temperament that count... good luck and have fun!! :D:D

No it wont and if it does I suggest you tell them what it is as its surprising how many people dont know what they are.

Oooohh!! Thanks for all your replies....its quite encouraging actually, lol!

I think we'd enjoy it....shes very inquisitive and loves new things..:)

I dont tend to have much luck, so if shes my luck quota, thats fine by me :D.

I was under the impression they are a result of the position of the foals feet in the womb(ie, back hoof pressed into neck)......is that twoddle?? Id love to know the real answer if not, lol!

Its from the arab line which is why a lot of TBs have them as they originate from arabs. Its a mark passed down through breeding. Probably got some arab or tb in her down the line. And male horses have them as well.

interesting about the arab line and male horses, I've only known 3 horses with them, 1 tb mare, one standardbred male and my warmblood male, never known what causes them, but have heard that it's a mark of a good horse! Which made me very happy when i found one on my homebred boy!!! I doubt very much that it will count against you in showing as it's not a conformational fault. But if you're doing it for fun anyway then it won't matter, you go and have fun, just remember with showing judges whilst they try to be impartial can't always get over ingrained likes and dislikes, what one judge places high, another may place low! But enjoy the experience and have fun.

yes my friend had a 15hh horse without the breeding known. Looked quite native and he had one. So dont know whether somewhere years down his generation there was some blood put into his line.

Well supposedly, any horse with a prophet's thumb mark is a descendant of one of the five mares of Mohammed. Out of a group of many horses, they were the only ones who returned to him when he called them instead of running to water, despite not having drunk anything for three days. So he gave them a mark as a sign that they were the finest mares and any horse with one is, supposedly, descended from them. My Arab has a thumb mark on her hindquarters, made me very happy when I noticed it :D.
It shouldn't go against your horse in the show ring because it isn't a scar or due to poor conformation, it's just something that a fair few horses have :)

This is great, thanks for replys!!

Thankyou also for correcting me....what a plonker,lol!!:D

She is a sec D so that would explain the lines. Very interesting stuff!!:)

My WB X AA has a prophets thumb... he was bitten, mild infection and had an abscess that burst when he was about 3. Just a thought.

My girly has one and so does my lad she's a tb x something or other and his a TB X ID - I read somewhere that any whorles on other parts of their body i.e. there faces were meant to mean something about their personality traits would be nice if that were true. :)

This is an interesting thread, my TB boy I bought at the end of last year has one on his neck and I wanted to do some showing with him this year! So now I can say he's well bred, doncha know ;)

Mine has one, I was always told it was the mark of good breeding. He is andalusian x lusitano x connemara and was bred by a showing yard. I assume it's from the connemara side, his dam is a registered connie show pony.
They aren't a conformational fault in showing, I do know that.

Oooh, thank you for posting this thread! I've always wondered if the mark would affect them in the show ring.

My full TB has one on his neck, and his field buddy, a TBxID has one on his bum. Field of 2 lucky, well bred horses :D haha.

I never realised they were so common. this post has made me think of my first horse 'Rocky'. My childhood boy who I had till he reached 27. The most beautiful bright bay New Forest with a Prophets Thumbprint.:)
