Proposed FEI rule changes 2019

I have absolutely no idea. How bizarre, I think they are one of the greatest tack inventions!

God only knows.
I suspect there has been an incident somewhere, where a neckstrap has somehow come over the head in a fall/whoopsie and somehow made the situation worse.

Personally I think there are far more productive things the FEI could spend time debating. Horse welfare for one.

It does seem completely ridiculous and OTT I have to say. Although, as ihw says, there must have been an incident somewhere for the rule to be changed.

I do think however that they are easily made attachable so I am not quite sure what all the fuss is about. Unless they then bring in methods of how they can be attached I can't see why you can't just either tape the neck strap to either a breast plate or martingale strap, or if neither of these are worn and/ or if people prefer them more move-able, then surely just a piece of twine attaching it to the D-Ring on the saddle will suffice?

We always secure the neck strap to a D ring or, more often the breastplate (where it passes over the wither), with a flash strap, other people I know use a bootlace. This stops the risk of it travelling up/over the neck and, I suppose, being a trip hazard but also means if you need to reach for it it's easily found.

It's funny over here the uproar is over the loss of Hackamores xc as well. And why does a CCI5* need to be limited to 75 entries??? I mean both the English 4*'s are normally above that.

I wonder why they've banned hackamores. I know mechanical hackamores can be harsh but surely they aren't any worse than some of the harsher bits. The neck strap rule seems very strange.

For hunting I attach neck straps with a thin cable tie to the saddle D or to the breastplate If the horse wears one .
The thing I learned from my first riding school that I am most greatful for is that they taught me to use a neckstrap that instinct learnt as a five yo has never left me .
I can not tell you how many times a neckstrap has saved me .
I still teach all my horses to stop when I pull the neck strap .

I’m gutted about the hackamore. I mean I’m no where near fei competitions but my horse is talented enough to get there and hates jumping in a bit 😔 it just doesn’t make any sense! Fair enough restrict the length of the shank but I ride her in a flower hackamore or a dr cooks!

It’s only a proposal at this stage, hopefully there will be some sane advocates of hackamores when it’s being debated.
