Prosthetic testicles

A conversation with an American client whose daschund has been given prostethic testicles to "maintain his natural look" after being castrated got me to wondering if anyone has encountered this in horses.

I can't imagine it's a common procedure, and complications such as infection and rejection spring to mind immediately. I'm also a little doubtful of people's motivations for having it done, especially if a monorchid/cryptorchid is trying to get through a stallion grading.

Has anyone any experience of this?

Not in horses, but my samoyed dogs brother has Newticles (sp)

Oh for gods sake! Cosmetic prosthetics in animals are for the OWNERS, not the animal. I briefly discussed a prosthetic eye when Sunny had to have an eye removed but he said it's OWNERS that worry about how the horse looks with just 1 eye. The horse only cares that he's out of pain at last. And prosthetics bring repeated infections, chronic discomfort and lord only knows what else. Crazy.

How stupid!!! Dog's b*llocks are horrible to look at and one of the benefits of neutering is surely that you don't have to look at them any more. As for horses, I can't see any reason for doing it, they're pretty much either stallions or geldings, and that's the end of it.

In theory, yes you are right, but at crufts (which I've shown at) and the qualifiers, and indeed, the little open shows, a lot of judges cannot tell the difference and therefore the owners get away with it.

Isn't that cheating?

My dog has a prosthetic eye. It wasn't a decision I came to after hours and hours of research, but rather, a choice I let my vet make--the top opthamologist in NYC--in an emergency situation.

My dog suffers no pain from the prosthesis. I know this because she has the sunniest disposition in the universe. I work from home, so am hyper-sensitive to her moods and emotions, and see no difference in her attitude and enthusiasm in daily life. She screeches when walking across ice, yelps if you step on her toe, but when I touch her fake eye--as I do daily, when putting in moisturiser, or just kissing it--she is relaxed.

Neuticles are silly, and maybe a prosthetic eye is, but my dog doesn't know the difference.

Well certainly your wee dog looks quite happy. (which eye is the prosthetic?)

However, I think prosthetic testicles for horses is a completely barmy idea.
Having said that, it wouldn't do if we were all the same. (though it certainly wouldn't be me paying for a prosthetic implant to replace something I had already paid to have removed!!!)

It's the one that looks somewhat like a blind eye.

I didn't even knew prosthetic eyes existed until my dog had her accident; truth be told, I didn't even know it would look like an eye (I thought we were getting an orb with the eyelid sewn up). Rather shocked when I picked her up at the hospital.

Step back in time, given the time to make a considered decision, I would probably have gone for enucleation, no eye, though I'm ever so glad that we've had no issues. Oh, and it only cost $200 more than the regular operation.

Would it be an option for a colour-matched prosthetic eye? That way you would never tell the dog had had a problem.

They start off colour-matched but fade to pale blue or green. Not sure why.
