Does anyone know how much protein a horse in work 6 days a week (3 x lunge, 3 x ride) would need to take in?

Humans work off one gram protein needed for every pound of bodyweight but this cannot be the same for horses?

He is currently on Equivite BodyBuilder but i dont want to be giving him too much if its just going to come out as waste.

Thanks!

I don't know about the equivite but I'm having great success with lysine which is about £10 for a 3 month supply. Mine is a fatty so is only having enough hard feet to put his vit/min supplement in and the lysine, but we went from this:

in about 5 months.

I don't know exactly but I had great results simply by changing my horse's feed last winter. He was getting just a fairly basic chaff, Safe & Sound I think, but that doesn't have much of anything in it. I changed him to Dengie Healthy Tummy which is an alfalfa based complete feed and the difference was amazing. It has a much higher level of protein in. He was/ is in full work with 3-4x schooling per week, hacking, jumping, lungeing, in hand work, and I do think upping the protein levels made a huge difference to him. His muscle development improved a lot. Also, I had to play around with saddles too, to find something he was really comfortable in and that was the final piece of the puzzle as he's now built up behind the wither, which was the only place he really needed to improve.

Horses in general do not need much protein; around 10% will do most horses in light work (which the vast majority of non-racing horses are). Most bagged feeds are too high.

Brillant, thanks all - im trying to build up his topline so i want to ensure that he is getting enough protein otherwise its a bit of a waste! il have a look at that calculator now! His bagged feed at the moment is 10% protein at the moment.

I feed a high protein balancer as the rest of his feed and forage does not average to the 10% of diet. The balancer looks high at 32%, but I only feed 500g.

He is a poor doer, but this winter on the balancer has kept his muscle really well and my instructor commented that he's so muscly these days!! Nice to hear ;)
