So my 4yo gelding sustained a rather nasty leg wound a nearly 3 weeks ago. It was about 5cm above his fetlock and was 10cm long and about 4cm wide and really deep, not far off the bone
He spent a few days in horsepital and had antibioitcs and stitches, the bottom end of the wound was left open to allow for drainage. The stitches were removed on monday and vet advised to use intrasite gel when changing bandages every 3-4 days. And she said he could start light work today. So i changed the dressing last night and the wound looks as though it has some proud flesh approx 3mm out from surface of the leg approx 4cm long (the part of the wound that was not stitched, also a small 0.5cm spot above where the stitches were. I am a nurse (people not horses) and we use intrasite on wounds that need debrided of slough but not on proud flesh. I cleaned the wound and it bled slighlty. Obviously the wound will not close if proud flesh present so . . .
So basically looking for some advice? what would you use to get rid of proud flesh. I have seen lots of suggestion such as chemical ones silver nitrate, copper sulphate etc. And also the natural treatments eg. aloe vera and honey. Anyone have any experience of using equaide also as the website looks promising? I am continuing with bandaging it but lightly working my 4yo is a bit of a joke, i tried lunging him but he zoomed off at 100mph (at least he isnt lame!) wondering if i should just turn him out, vet didnt really give me an answer just muttered something about keepign bandages on?
Help anyone? pear cider and walkers sensations for those who got this far on a friday night! thanks
