Hello - Just wondering what the best way to treat proud flesh is? Will I def need vet out to remove?

I have been in hospital/recovering for 3 weeks and my horse (17yo TBx) injured his leg in the field. A friend has been keeping an eye on him, she works at a hunt yard and is fairly knowledgeable. When he first wounded himself, my friend said it was not worth getting the vet out as A. IF it did need a stitch it was now too swollen to do so, and B. She didnt' think it needed it and she would be able to treat it. It was a bit mucky, and had a slight smell, so she dressed it with manuka honey (she's very into natural horsemanship/treatments etc). The wound is now v clean, but 3 weeks on, has a good amount of proud flesh.

I was wondering what folks experience of treating this kind of thing are. I am still restricted as to how often I can visit, but obviously want and need to do the right thing for the poor old boy. He is not lame on it, but when wound exposed to the air it seems to cause him discomfort (as it would with a cool breeze whipping around it).

Mnay thanks

Can I ask where abouts the wound is on his leg?

Usually proud flesh does need to be cut away and then the wound dressed properly with Fucidin H to prevent proud flesh re forming.
