Proud Flesh

Penny got a small cut on her back leg the other week, really not a big deal at all, but now that its healed it appears to have developed into a bit of proud flesh. Now I've not had experience of this before (been lucky in that none of my others have ever got it) and was wondering if there was anything I could do to get rid of it or make it go down a little bit.

If you contact your vet they may be able to give you a gel or cream to put on it that contains copper sulphate to get rid of the proud flesh- its quite inexpensive as well.

Years ago my pony had this problem with a small cut. The vet got some sharp scissors and simply cut it off. You then need to pressure bandage it, so it does not re-occur.

My hunter mare had bad proud flesh on her cannon bone. I used some stuff on the advice from my vet called equaid.. It was fab.. They have a website.. if you google it i am certain you will find it.. All you do is paint this stuff on.. It was amazing and it basicallly took the proud flesh away and didnt damage the underlying good flesh..

Generally depending on the amount of proud flesh the vet would remove it and then bandage with a contact material something like melolin as this does not promot (sorry spelling) granulation. However I have known something as simple as 'Sudocrem' (which is a benzobenzanate) to be applied to the wound and then (believe it or not) cling film ontop before simple stable/turnout bandages applied. But obviously a chat with your vet would be required! Good luck

I have this at the moment with our yearling.

Cut off the proud flesh with scalpul, warning it will bleed alot.

Fuciderm cream applied 2/3 times a day, then bandage with 'active' dressing and vetwrap. Do this until dryed out roughly for about 7 days then do 7 days with this hydra gel (sorry forgot the name), then revert back to fuciderm for 7 days etc.

Keep banadaged avoid taring around the field as this encourages proud flesh.

I used sulphur powder on my boy and it worked amazingly well along with clean correct bandaging.

The sulphur works well because it creates a chemical reaction to keep it from producing more granulated flesh ...
