What can you tell me about this as i have posted about my mare that had a bad injury removing the skin from her back leg and we are not talking a little bit here it was from the knee down to the top of the hoof a big flap.
Anyway the vet said he's coming out to keep an eye on the proud flesh and may cut some back on thrus as there wasn't enough on friday, now my worry is will it stop growing?how is it controlled? and will it close over and heal, you know what vets are like whenyou ask them....hmm rrr errrr

When its trimmed back it gives the wound chance to close up a bit but the proud flesh just has to be kept trimmed back as often as poss so the you get the best healing. We've just finished a yearling that had a slice down to the bone on a front cannon it was trimmed back at least 5 times then all of a sudden closed up and healed within a couple of weeks. It was a 3 month job in total, the vet thought it would be 3-6 months. Good luck

Granulation tissue or proud flesh is a good thing and important in aiding healing..the only problem is when there is too much of it - apparently horses produce it quicker than any other animal!! typical! It can either be trimmed or you can apply a antibiotic treatment with steriod cream ( i can't remember whats its called but the vets should prescribe it for you). Don't worry too much...with good managment it should be fine..we had a horse who had a nasty accident once and proud flesh appeared. It cleared up with proper treatment and now you can barely see the scar!

Maybe ask your vet for a lasor (sp) ? A horse we had in to sell gashed his knee and because it got lasored everyday we had absolutly no proud flesh!
