currently have bent leg stirrups , correct size and insist on proper footwear. Today, pony spooked, foot got trapped and it was only the leather that came away from the saddle foot/leg was released.

proven recommendations appreciated. dont my paying decent money if they work.

thanks

The bent leg are actually the most unsafe stirrups in existence as the shape allows your foot to slide right through.

The safest is the 'Toe Stopper' but they aren't the prettiest.

Peacock stirrups are great for little people and it is possible to get adult sized ones similar - they just don't have elastic. They are called Safe Style - friends have them and they are very smart - take a little getting used to but are extremely safe.

I know people say adults shouldn't use them, but I have traditional Peacock stirrups for my mare, with the rubber bands. I used to use them all the time when Henry was a flighty youngster and the bands do come off quite easily.

Just be aware that they are not made strong enough for more than a childs weight and have been known to bend out of shape.

I use peacock stirrups as well. The bending is not a problem provided you check them and replace as necessary. It's far better that they bend that that they should snap :)

I like the look of the ones tnavas posted pics of though!

I can remember last year speaking to a well known trainer (a FBHS) and he asked me to ensure that my novice husband stopped using his bent leg stirrups as they were unsafe and went on to say that he knew of a few folks getting dragged with them when folks had lost stirrup then put foot back in stirrup back but with it turned the wrong way round so it jammed in to their instep if that makes any sense

I don't like peacock stirrups for the bending. Pity Barnes Buckles are not more available

What about the flexi ones? Do they actually work in releasing your foot?

I have something similar to these, and they always market them as "safety stirrups" but I have no idea if they actually provide less chance of your foot getting stuck.

and have been looking to get a pair of these -

try free jump stirrups, very safe and look good too. The only issue is you cant run them up like normal stirrups. The grip is brilliant too.

afaik the sprengers are supposed to flex so your foot does not get stuck. whether that's true or not, I don't know..
I've never had an issue personally and I use sprengers or Whitaker flexi stirrups on all of my saddles.

The ones I have are now about 13 years old and I'm about 10 stone (have been closer to 11, *cough*)! Will definitely keep an eye out for bending, though. Maybe it's because I'm a happy hacker that I haven't had an issue.
