Anyone on here have any experience with this drug? It's designed for dogs with arthritis but I've heard via another forum of people with arthritic horses using it to good effect. Seems some vets won't prescribe it for horses unless pushed, but it's cheaper than the equine version (isn't everything). Wondered if others have used it and if it helped.

My sister in the USA uses Previcox quite a bit on her horses but I've never heard of it used on horses here. I recently Googled it as she suggested it might be a good alternative to Bute but I couldn't find anything UK based except for use in dogs.

I would also be interested in people's experience.

Previcox is marketed as equioxx in the UK. Vets cannot legally prescribe Previcox for horses in this country when there is already a licenced equine alternative - regardless of the cost! It was initially marketed here are ideal for arthritic and laminitis horses but many vets report poorer control of inflam/pain than bute. It is also much more expensive than bute so is not a viable replacement.

Fact remains that you cannot legally prescribe Previcox for horses when there is an equine equivalent and that it therefore becomes too expensive for the vast majority of owners to use long term and until that changes (which is unlikely) it won't be widely used. Rimadyl for horses has been removed Ron the market as it just isn't popular enough which again is a cost issue - it has similar effects to bute but at roughly 5-6 times the price and not licenced for long term use. For what it's worth I used Previcox before Equioxx came on the market and do rate the drug. However Equioxx has priced itself out of the market and I have only once prescribed it where a cox selective anti-inflammatory was important. Also, as an aside, equioxx is not licenced for long term use either.
