I recently purchased a bag of feed for my horse and had to provide the store with my name and address details as I was purchasing feed for an animal that may enter the human food chain. As I have already stated on my horse's passport that she is not to enter the human food chain I do not see why I have to give out my personal details in public in order to buy a bag of feed. It is already unacceptable to do this every time I purchase a wormer. It almost makes it feel like a criminal offence to undertake what is a normal weekly/monthly activity. Has anyone else had to do this just for a bag of feed?

Yep, for chicken corn, sheepnuts.....be doing it for cat food next! It is all to do with traceability- apparently something bad got into a batch of feed once and they needed to trace (very quickly) all of the batch to withdraw it so needed contact details for people who had bought it- it would be a complete logistic nightmare im my opinion-even with names and addresses- this is what our local feed shop told me- but I actually think that it is more to do with having to conform to EC regulations, ISO standards etc and is yet another example of red tape for red tape sake!
When I first applied for a holding number to keep goats/sheep it took 6 months for the paperwork to reach the appropriate authority- In that six months, we could have started and finished a major Foot and Mouth outbreak, and it would have just passed me by...
And yes, I do feel like a criminal every time a buy a bag of feed/ worm anything/ buy sheep medication.

OK so is this yet another marketing ploy to get your name & address details??? So then they can bombard you with yet more junk mail??

I'm afraid my suspicious mind goes into overdrive when I hear stuff like this.

Either that, or someone was having an Anal Moment.

In my horse's passport, I seem to remember filling in the bit that says that he/she is NOT ever to be going into the foodchain for human consumption; so surely (presuming OP has done this) this means that you don't then need to give name & address???

If I get asked, I'll just take the passport and show them that bit with it filled in!!

But you really couldn't make it up ............. :(

I only get asked in one place I buy horse feed for my address, there is a sign stating its an EU directive or something. Its a small retailer that I use a lot and have certainly not had any more marketing junk because of it. I do wonder where on earth they are storing all this data, and why other, well known retailers do not ask for the same infirmation. Odd
