Had horse on loan for a few months and need to pull his mane, which he hates and turns himself inside out, he's so sensitve that he was having an episode when I was teasing a clump of mud out with my fingers over the weekend.

Twitching makes no difference and at 17.1 he's to big to just tie up short and get on with it as he's likely to hurt either himself or me! Have tried a solo comb but as soon as I hold the end of the hairs (however lightly) he flips.

What other options are there? Sedating, those thinning rakes, pretending he's a native

(he's a ISH), don't want to go down the hogging route as I want to do WH with him this summer.

Very grateful for any advice.

Someone on this forum had problem with her horse he's also 17 hands so i came to the rescue... I used the clipper blade (without the actual clippers) and comb his mane as normal from the length you want it to be to give it more natrual look and if you comb it from top it will go spiky! (said horse sussed out so i got Friend to pinch his neck (we didn't have twitch with us) and he was "dopey" and i managed to get worst of it off.... Also the trick is pull manes after they had been worked as the pores are open up to make hair follicles to come out easily and less painful.

Thanks, sorry for being a touch thick, but did this approach just shorten it or did it thin it as well? He has a very thick section in the middle of his mane that I need to thin as well as shortening the whole mane overall.

I have just bought a tail rake after reading great reports on here. I cut the mane to length with scissors

(very short, as I don't have time to plait for hunting, its about 2 inches long!) and then used the tail rake. It looks great!
Before I cut it to length I just raked it (about 3/4 weeks ago) and it thinned it really nicely but didn't shorten it. I could then plait but it was so long it was a nightmare to roll them up.

Ah, you have met my horse then! Sounds identical. What is he like just fo rnormal mane brushing? If I convince mine I'm just brushing/plaiting his mane he is fine!
Food?
Mine is also 17hh, and throws himself about at the thought of it being pulled, as soon as I start combing with the solocomb. The thinning combs are brilliant.

Tried food and pulling when he was hot so it didn't hurt as much - no go!

He's okay with it being combed / brushed but as soon as you take hold of the end of the hair (even just to lift them over his neck) he get's twitchy.

He has got a lot of mane so think someone in his past may have been a little over enthusiastic when pulling and left him a little neurotic.

Think I will try one of those rakes though, they do sound quite good.

I was told about a great trick to try with my boy - he also hates having his mane pulled!
Clove oil! The girl who told me said to put clove oil at the base of his mane and it'll numb it so they don't feel it when you pull it! Haven't tried it yet myself but in theory it sounds like it could work!

Thanks both, will look into the clove oil option, but think I'm going to have to look at the thinning rake than tradional pulling
