Hi,
Have a TB event horse (who does have arab blood in him... helpful!) who used to just be a spooky stresshead all the time.

Have put him onto Brewers Yeast, and he's very cool at home now, but when we take him away (especially with another horse- worst when it's the mare) he stresses out and spooks/leaps/bucks/calls and just generally behaves like a pr*t... It's much better since he's been on the Brewers Yeast but he still behaves so badly!

We don't let him get away with anything but was just wondering if anybody has used anything that works on horses like this? Have tried Tempralax to no effect whatsoever... has anyone tried "LesstressE" from Trinity Consultants? Have tried the magnesium/ptryptophan (sp) based calmers and they dfefinitely don't work as well as the brewer's yeast.

Sorry just desperate to control the behaviour a bit better as he's such a superstar of a horse at home or at local shows when he's by himself (he would have won a foxhunters the other day but was jumping on a ticket)...

Grrrr why could I have not bought myself a nice warmblood that didnt have several screws loose???

any info/help/opinions appreciated!

warmbloods can also have screws loose!!!!!!

(sorry i cant be of any help - lots of people are talking about brewers yeast, how much do you give and is it a regular thing? Oh, and where do you get it from!?!)

haha, well okay, but the warmbloods i've had have always been lovely and they just do silly little bucks as oppsed to the skitz leaps that all the TBs have done (the previous ones haven't been as bad as this one!)

I feed quite alot, about 30/40mg a day, and I get it from yourhealthfoodstore.co.uk or something like that... split between two feeds daily, they messed about with deliveries though so he was off it for a week and it was just dreadful so yes def a regular thing!

Have heard that the brewers yeast is more effective for TBs and the magnesium calmers are better for Warmbloods but dont know how much truth is in that!

Lunge / ride before you leave home to take the edge off?

FWIW, I had a HannxTB once & o/h had to lunge him for a good 45 mins at shows before I'd consider getting on him. That was after already doing something with him at home. He would behave like a just backed, unrideable lunatic & was a complete menace with other horses. So at shows I'd be the speck in the distance as far away from the others as possible, & once he'd been lunged enough for me to get on, I'd stay on the lunge while riding for a bit as if I was doing a Leading Rein class...

So don't think it's just you! (The horse did get better eventually, I promise you.)

When I worked for an event yard we had quite a famous horse (been around badders) that was a complete physco, that he wasnt even taken out on the roads, he colic the whole time and when out in the field just run up and down the whole time!!but he was a very good event horse. When we took him to comps, we didn't really take him out the box until needed and he had a companion with him, lunged him for about half an hour when we got there, 15mins before ridder got on then he was warmed up for a good 3/4 hours before dressage!!!We use to give him a calmer from nutriscience, AnxiKalm Compete Oral Gel on the day, look on there website for dosage and more info.,they also do a powder form. sorry I cant tag it in cus I dont know how to!!!!!hope this helps!!

Would be good if you could find something that gives that bit extra for competiitions and more stressful situations. I use nupafeed and give an extra dose about 2 hrs before I compete def takes edge off. Mine is a TB / WB who shows many of the same symptoms you describe but is loads better on the nupafeed. I think you need to get the extra stuff down them before the adrenalin kicks in as that will override most things!

thanks, thats exactly what i'm looking for... Jumped him at home today around a course of 1m30 and hes just so pleasant at home, yet i took him away with the mare on weds for a lesson locally and he was like a just backed 3 yo prancinga round and cantering sideways into everything grrr... will look into the nupafeed, is it costly?
