I think i am probably being a bit naive so can someone explain to me how it works.

Horse is PTS by lethal injection at home, local Knackerman is called to remove the body (arrives within an hour of horse being down), bill is received from Vet & Knackerman.

What happens to body of horse, are they cremated? If the offer of individual cremation & return of ashes was given but not taken up, do they cremate a load of bodies together.

Or, does the knackerman sell the body on for horse meat?? Passport not checked by Knackerman nor does he ask about drugs, horse on long term bute, can this type of horse be put in he food chain or does it have to be drug free and fresh/live (sorry) meat.

Oh dear :-(

if put down by injection this horse wouldn't be going near any supply chain as the drug used to end the animals life is still in the body after death - usually the knackermen send these bodies for something called rendering or they are cremated - if you ask for individual cremation then they are cremated on their own but if not and you are not expecting the ashes back then they are cremated with other bodies - hope this is not too graphic an explanation

No, thank you not too graphic an explanation, i thought this was the case and was hoping i hadn't been naive. It's just all this talk about the slaughter houses got me thinking.

IMHO have the horse shot not injected by a Licenced Horse Slaughterer - Knackerman and get them to take the carcass, As I have stated on before their is an art to shooting a horse and these people get far more practise than Vets.

having seen many many horses shot by bolt and 2 put to sleep by injection by vet, i would say that the vets need sueing for what they do !!! shooting is instant , as peaceful as this could be and they go with a mouthful of grub !! knackerman every time .

Thanks for replies, but horse already gone, was PTS by my wonderful vet by lethal injection, taken away by local man and i was told that the horse would be cremated.

Have checked on the companies website and they cremate the bodies, so my mind is put at rest now.

I think its all this talk about horse meat found in Tesco burgers and now the Slaughterhouse in Cheshire has made me a bit sad really :-(

My Vet put a horse to sleep by injection in November. It was quick, peaceful and over in minutes. Wonder why your experiences were so bad!

They knew that the horse had been PTS by lethal injection (hence no need to look at passport, they already knew that carcase was unusable) & the bill you received was for collection & disposal via incineration / cremation.
Hope your mind is resting a bit easier now, but I'm sure the knackerman wouldn't mind you calling to check if you're still unsure.

izzwizz , you say it was over in minutes , shooting is over in seconds . it also depends a lot on vet, size of horse , and whether horse is up or down to begin with. it can and does regularly go horribly wrong. i personally think for equines that is the best way. just my own opinion

after going thru Andrew goatmans fb im not sure id want someone to pts with a bolt gun...according to him they should not be used... also after watching what goes on in some slaughterhouses in uk...I wouldn't choose that either...however I have 3 very diff characters and id do what was best by them..one is terrified of injection shes prob going to get the bullet by local hunt, other 2 will go with vet if needs be... I don't care how I feel itl be whats better for them at the time :)

and surely a knackerman could tell if the horse died naturally aswell?

Not necessarily. Horse lies down & slips quietly away on it's own, horse has injection, lies down & slips away. Not a lot of difference in the end. The vet may have shaved the injection site, or may not have. If that has been done the horse may or may not be lying on that side of it's neck.
