well my mare oakey has kissing spine....but not just one or 2, all the way from her withers to her dock!!!!!!!! it is so bad they couldnt inject to make her better so she has had it for years!
the vet that 5* vetted her should have spotted it - i even said when i first saw her she looked a tad wierd but he said there is nothing wrong
it is just going to get worse and she may have to be PTS!
I HAVE BEEN CRYING ALL AFTERNOON SINCE I KNEW NAND I AM SOOOOOOOOOO UPSET!

we have the choice to have her PTS and out of pain/uncormfort or *give* her to someone as a companion......... however if she was a companion she would still have this thing and it gets worse and worse and someone else may not know what to do.......... what should i do

btw we only found this out at 3.45 thisafternoon after she had an x-ray as trainer thought she seemedd uncomfortable and chiro couldnt find anything wrong. we have had the chiro check her 3 times since sept and nothing

so should i say goodbye or give her as a companion?
thanx

If you could keep her then then I would say do and moniter to see if she is ok being a companion (she may have to be pts anyway or she may spend many happy painfree years grazing). But if you have to give her to someone else to keep her as a companion then I would definately PTS. As you say, you won't have control to make sure they are doing right by her.

This is an awful situation

thankies - well we cant afford to pay for her and the next hose - they said it is just getting worse from now as she is 11 and has had it for ages......... i just feel i want to put her out of it - she is obvi uncomfy as she is very twitchy and sensitive.....

It's a very hard decision, but for me I would PTS - if you give her away as a companion, especially to someone you don't know, she could end up being used, or sent for meat. Let her go now, and she will be pain free, and you will have full control.

Your vet of course will advise the very best thing to do for your horse, there is a real danger that if she goes off to be a companion, especially if sold, she will have a long and painful future as some unscrupulous people will keep her alive for riding or breeding with no consideration for her condition.

I think you have two choices, PTS which is sad, but she is no longer in any discomfort (and may be covered by insurance) OR find a loan companion home where you can keep checking that she is not deteriorating and is getting pain relief- in this case I recommend strongly that yu get her L stamped so she can never be sold on.(however you may have a bigger fight with your insurers to get any compensation

I know it is a very sad time, be sure to do the best thing for her.

Big hugs for you.
I'm afraid that bad kissing spine really does lead to them being PTS. What I'd do is bute her up, turn her out for a few weeks and have her put down once she's had some chill out happy time. But thats a very hard decision and its easy to sit here and type it and not easy to do.
xx

I would ask my vet for the best idea and let him know you are considering other options but would like to know what is best for her in his/her view. ((((((((((BIG HUGS TO U)))))))))

Am sorry to hear about your horse, its a very hard time you have, I personally would pts the horse so its in no more discomfort or pain, but only you can make the choice, Someone mentioned the loss of use stamp, I would be wary of that just because there stamped does not mean you can not sell on there are a lot of dodgy people selling horses around, Good luck I wish you the best of luck my thoughts go out to you.

So sorry to hear that, it is a hard decision to make but you will know when its the right time and what is the right thing to do. ((((((BIG HUGS coming your way)))))). xxxx

thanx guys. I agree with boss aswell. She has been living in luxury for the last 2 weeks as she is getting trained - ridden every day and living in - which i think she prefers - she is being pampered and is happier than i have ever seen her. I would love her to go at this place as she loves it - i can still hack her but she is quite naughty - obvious reasons
but can be hacked accosionaly so i thought i would take her out on a nice hack, have one final blast and get her pts the next day - get her looking all purdy and nice before and be with her - it makes me cry just thinking about it

Be strong....Think at least finaly the pain will end for her.... I'm sure she has had a happy time, I think letting her out of your hands could be trouble. I have seen too many horses given as companions only and slapped in the face for putting up with the pain of riding when sold on... Pts will insure her of her furture...And a painless one at that.

Could she not be operated on. My horse has had a kissing spine op and the vet at the time told me that he had taken out every other one on a horse before!!

Think i would PTS as well!!!

Keeping a horse that can not be ridden at such a young age is very expensive and time consuming, not to mention the pain she is going to be in as she detriorates!!

I considered putting my boy out as a companion once but decided against it as i might of got him back at any time on short notice if i loaned him and if i sold him i had no say in what happened to him and he could be sold on as a ridden horse.

It is a very gard decision to make and its easy for outsiders to say PTS but its much harder when its your own horse.

Hugs x x

Ditto Boss & Triple H as well I'm afraid.

You also need to look in to how she ever passed a 5* vetting with the condition as established & advanced as this.

So sorry that you are having to go through this.
