Im looking after my dads dog this week and its been a regular occurance over the years he is a 8 year old caverlier and such a lovely dog. However he has had spondylosis since he was about 3 and after trying all non steroidals we have ended up on a mixture of steroids and gabapentin, which had worked well for him however in the last year the steroids have caused pancreatitis and he is now on a low fat diet, it is also causing his coat to be fine and fall out so he doesn't look good and is always hungry. We try to always carry him up stairs but its hard at mine as I have a 3 story house and he just tajes himself up and down with a struggle whilst im in the shower for example.

His back end is getting weaker and if im honest if it was my dog I would be thinking about pts as he has lost the spark in his eyes, but my dad seems to want to wait until his back legs fail to me that is cruel but its not my dog to make the decision for. I've had to drop him off at the vet this morning as he managed to find and eat 8 mini pork pies last Thursday and it has caused a blockage this is due to the steroids making him so hungry. I subscribe to the better a month to Early than a day to late, but im not sure im just being hasty?

You could ask your dad how he thinks it would feel, if he could support his own weight, was hungry all the time and was losing all his hair, basically, if he was miserable and in pain, and had no idea why or how to rationalise it.

I think im going to have to, I'm also going to have a chat to vet as I always get to take him to the vets as my dad struggles to get there while they are open, so he doesn't hear first hand what they say.
