Sorry for the morbid subject, but one we all have to think about. If anything should happen to me I want my horse to be PTS. He would likely pass a vetting for general use but he has several issues that means he would be cheap and have potential not to be managed well and end up a very unhappy horse. Unless he found someone who loved him with his quirks and special needs like I do but I'm a pessimist hence thinking PTS would be preferable.

Am I allowed to write in his passport that he must be PTS in the event of my death? I'm happy to share my expectations with the vet and YM. My husband already knows but it occurred to me that if I add it to his passport it would then be obvious if everyone had forgotten or whatever. I know the passport could be 'lost' and replaced if someone wanted to but I thought it could be a helpful way to record my wishes. I could also write down what is wrong with him.

I didn't know if I am allowed to deface his passport like this? Or whether it's just a plain stupid idea? Thoughts?

Hopefully we'll both keep going for a long while yet and hopefully I'll be the one who is around when he does go but just some random early morning thinking that I thought I'd share.

Thanks ?

Honestly, I don't know about the "legalities" of overwriting his passport but to my mind if he is not going anywhere then I would just do it. I had a horse with a history of a thrombosis after injection in a particular side of the neck - I made sure everyone knew about it in case he needed vet attention when I was not around and wrote it in large letters in the passport. I was not prepared to compromise his health for any bureaucratic rule about who might write in his passport!!

i"think" you probably need to do a statement of wishes and have this lodged with your will.

obviously you should speak to whoever you trust to carry out these wishes to make sure that they are happy to do so and this will also ensure that if anything should happen to you that "someone" can take responsibility for your horse.

.... i have an arrangement with a friend and also made my vets aware that should anything happen to me (death or incapable of decisions) that this person has full power to make decisions / authorise treatment ... actually thinking about it i added the treatment bit in case i was ever not contactable.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. Can't see it would actually matter but thought id check other opinions first. I'm rather reluctant to deface it but if it helps protect him in anyway, I'll do it. Unless I end up in big trouble for it!

Writing a will and an expression of wish are on the 'to do' list but I'm very bad at actually getting it done ?. This was more a case of if husband and I get wiped out in our car one day, no one could easily sell my boy as something he's not (i.e a fit and well sport horse).

I am going to email the vet to get it recorded there. That's easily done.

I have registered mine with WHW as a gift to them if I should pop my clogs before he does. I have put up a note in the pony shelter to that effect, with their contact details on it. The instructions are also in my will.
I fully expect that WHW would probably put him to sleep anyway as he is old already. I would have been quite happy to put that as my wish in the will I've just made but it didn't seem fair on my executors to make them deal with that on top of everything else.

I have to say that making my will was a really depressing experience! I don't blame you for putting that off.

Also worth letting any official next of kin know wishes with regards to animals as they'd be the first people notified in the event of anything happening to you, as well as having it recorded in your will.

I have it in my will that my pony is to be PTS if I die before him. The solicitor who wrote the will is also the executor. She's obviously not horsey so was a bit shocked when I said I wanted it put in. I've also put it in writing to the vet and the yard owner knows. It's also in my Power of Attorney in case that needs to be evoked.

Please could I ask if your solicitor is a friend or are you able to actually nominate a solicitor in a professional capacity as an executor?

It's the solicitor that wrote the will for me. She was happy to be the executor. I've seen how difficult it can be and didn't want to ask anyone to do it. You have a to pay for the service which comes out of your estate.
