I am re-taking the lunge/lead rein section of the PTT exam (the only section I failed - I did go blank and dismount my rider with side reins still attached. Oops.)
Any tips advice to get me through round 2? Exercises, work plans. A lot of books say take reins and stirrups away together, others say do not. I only removed stirrups the time before.
Same for lead rein just in case I get given that instead. Any help greatly received!

If the side reins thing was your only real fault last time, you should be fine.

With regards the reins and stirrups, you only have 20 minutes with a horse and rider who are BOTH unfamilier to you, better to focus on one thing and do it really well than to try and do everything and risk too many issues IMHO.

The main thing for the lunging is that you are doing something which is of real use to the rider in front of you and not simply going through a list of exercises because they are what you have learnt. So if they are reliant on the hands in rising trot, taking reins away is likely to be useful. If they are in a chair position, removing stirrups will probably be of more use.

For the lead rein lesson, make sure your explanations are clear. If you happen to have an adult rider, ensure you don't talk to them like a child. Think safety first and, depending on their experience, run through the basic stop, start, steer, beginnings of trot.

In both cases, build a rapport with the rider and try to get feedback from them as you go to check they are understanding what you are teaching them.

Main comment on examiner feedback form was horse not forward.... Pony was an RDA that had a dislike to anything other than slow walk! It's nerve-wracking going in for it again. Hadn't considered an adult for the lead, thank you.

Use your time warming up the horse without a rider to get behind it and make sure it respects you. Don't let the horse 'train' you into his way of thinking!!

Best of luck. When/where is your retake?

Thank you! It's Friday at Summerhouse, Gloucester. I've been teaching all summer, and done PC Camps, it's the being judged that sets the nerves off!

Because at PT you are technically stage 2, can you step in to the circle on the lunge?
