Pub Quiz Questions On Dogs

Last night at the local pub quizz a question was asked what is the only breed of dog to suffer from gout.

So no googling or checking of books what would be your answer.

Bottle of home made sloe gin to the winner.

I would guess Dallies, but only because a friend has them and is hyper careful of the diet so that they don't get crystals in the urea. Never mentioned gout, per se though.

Im gonna guess GSD,seeing as they are one of the reliables when it comes to many sorts of disorders...sorry GSD mafia but its what my notes tell me..

Though having read the dalmation note above..that does make a lot more sense.High uric acid is what causes gout and dallys have a breed issues with uric acid conversion..id have been thinking more kidneys stones tho...*decides this weekend is urology and endocrine review time!

Thats quite a difficult pub question!!I wouldnt be certain of the answer and Im studying Veterinary!

I cheated and googled, but this leads me to suggest that the question doesnt have a definitive answer

From a quick google, it seems all dogs can get a form of canine gout, although it's very rare. More commonly referred to as ascalcium circumscripta, it seems that dals are indeed the most likely culprits. Although a google search only brought up one or two goodle scholar results, and I didn't even read the full abstracts so don't quote me on that!

I have no idea, but will go with the majority and say dallies. Have to say I have never heard of it in GSDs so it certainly ain't common, but don't worry Aru I do know you students are given GSDs as examples of loads of problems. Can I just ask that when you are qualified you never look at a lame GSD and diagnose bad hips without an x ray.

I am very impressed and want you on our team. No team got this right I went with Bulldog because of its confirmation but the correct answer was

DALMATION

On looking up on google later that night they gave Dals.GSD & Irish Wolfhound so no definitive answer as such.

So well done for you who got it right and also about being honest about googling.

I've never heard of a GSD getting gout in my life.

How interesting that it should be a breed thing - never heard of dogs getting it, I would have been stumped!

So that's now two things I have learned today. Am exhausted

Didn't spot this before but I would have said dallies too . Mind you I would never have thought of them as having gout but I do know gout in humans is caused by food and drink high in purines and food high in purines causes dallies to be stone formers . I've only had one mild stone former . I now tend to use the traffic light chart but before the internet it was much harder to research what was good and bad or helpful . What on earth did we do before the internet !! Most probably had a life .
