I have a friend visiting from Europe and while she is here we will ride my horses. Her horse back at home is insured and this includes public liability for her. My horses are not insured individually but I have personal public liability insurance that covers me to ride/handle my own horses plus horses that I don't own.

It seems that my friend can't get any of the insurance products that leisure riders typically use to get PL like BHS, WHW, Harry Hall membership because she doesn't reside in the UK. So how does she get insurance to cover her for the one or two days of riding that she will do when she visits? Surely this use case happens in reverse whenever anyone goes abroad to ride whilst on holiday? I must admit I've never given it much thought when I have ridden abroad

Travel insurance? Check that it covers the type of riding as polo, hunting and racing isn't usually covered. I'm just not sure it would cover private riding. Ive had to check before when I worked abroad but not had this situation before.

I believe that if you are a BHS gold member, then if she has your permission to ride your horses, then she will also be covered for public liability. From their policy summary.....

Extensions 1) Authorised Users’. The policy shall provide indemnity to any person given permission by the Insured and in the presence of the Insured to use the Insured’s Horse. Provided always that such person shall act as though they were the insured observe, fulfill and be subject to the Terms and Conditions, Limitations and Exclusions of this policy and schedule.

Obviously, please don't take my word for it, give them a call to check if that's a route you wish to go down.

I’d say travel insurance too. Seem to remember someone asked a similar question recently and taking out BHS membership for a month wasn’t an option. No idea if a specific BHS member's policy can cover someone else though?

From my experience in riding abroad, my riding specific travel insurance hasn’t been for public liability, it’s been for injury/medical/repatriation type scenarios.

BHS covers PL for anyone riding a members horse with their permission.
If you don’t have BHS it would be worth checking with your current insurers to see if you can cover your friend on your policy.

Exactly this, her travel insurance is not going to provide public liability for what she might damage on a horse whilst travelling, it's covering damage to her.

Interesting that BHS covers this scenario. I use Harry Hall for my public liability and they do not provide cover in this scenario.
