Advice please. The mare has just come in with a swollen eye - just the two lids not surrounding. She has vision. I have bathed with saline solution and I will keep her in, mostly so I can look at it in am as she can be a cow to catch.

Any other advice?? Someone suggested antihistamine???

Get the vet! You really can't mess about with eyes. My mare had similar symptoms to yours, she had been absolutely fine about 10.30 am by 2.00pm her eye was swollen and running. Vet came out and found an ulcer - we 6think she had rubbed her face and caught her eye on something. A week of anti-bs and painkiller - Eqinixin - and she was sorted. I know from personal expereince how painful an ulcer on the eye can be, I was glad I hadn't delayed.

A mare I used to own regularly used to rub her face on her haynet and get a puffy eye. I used to bathe it with warm water and milk, which took the puffiness down. It wasn't runny or sticky just irritated.

Second this get the vet never take risk with eyes as it could be an ulcer or worse. My mares had ( ulcers/cataract/uveitis ), one of my livery horses had this and they left it and left it and just said he got it every year. Turned out an ulcer and he was kept at vets over 3 weeks, don't delay call today

Just poped out to check, eye calmed down almost back to normal. Hopefully what ever irritated it has gone. If not ok in am will get the vet. Thanks All
