Hi

My 22 year old has started to come in a little earlier now in the afternoon about 2pm and when i get there at 5.30 his legs seem a little puffy, the same in the morning. Is this just due to him being in longer? Should i look to get some leg warmers to help with his circulation?

My mares do this after she has jumped they go back down again after she goes out or has a little walk. I have just left her too it as long as they go back down. If you use stable bandages the swelling CAN just appear higher up so I never do this, also a badly bandaged horse does more damage than not bandaged ( not having a go at your skills, just putting it out there) It can also be caused by too much protein in their feed. So if she is on a high protein diet maybe cut back a little as her body isn't using it.

My older lad is getting puffy legs again now when he stands in over night. Vet not worried about it. I found last winter that clivers and calendula helped so I'm going to give him this again. Nothing to lose and relatively cheap!

At the moment he is only walking out 3/4 times a week for about half and hour
His feed is as follows

Biotin
Oil
Garlic
Vitamin/ mineral Supplement
Alfa Oil
Veteran Mix
Fast fibre

And hay!

My Tb has suffered with this in this past when he is stabled overnight through the winter and most likely will again this year. They always go down once he's out or ridden so it doesn't worry me. That said I did invest in some magnetic stable wraps and I do find that they help a little. I'm not saying they cured the problem just that the puffyness is a bit less. I still use them as I can't see they hurt and if they help keep his circulation going then that's no bad thing.

My tb exactly the same, back legs only, no heat and go down when he us worked. I just give him a bit longer to warm up before work, was also advised that a cold hose would help x

Is there any reason why he has to come in so early?

I would try and leave him out as long as possible as it is a circulation thing... you could also try magnetic wraps overnight which should help with circulation.

Its because the others come in early and if i leave him out any longer i have to pay to have him brought in so my friend and i decided to help each other out and so she gets them in at 2pm before doing the school run

Ah thats a shame... I would be better for him to be out as much as possible but if that isn't possible I would certainly try and get him out of his box at 5.30pm and take him for a little walk, or 10 mins walking and trotting on the lunge before he's left for the night.

My mare gets swollen legs too, especially her fetlocks. I did a thread on here about it and many people advised either to leave alone or bandage. I decided to leave them alone as my bandaging skills aren't up to scratch and I'm worried I will do more harm then good. She walks them off though quite quickly. She is out from 6 am- 6ish pm so try to get her out as much as possible.

Bandaging helps but as said already it needs to done perfectly or it can cause further problems. I use thermatex leg wraps as my cobs legs are clipped, keeps them warm and circulation better. The swelling is lymph fluid building up as far as I'm aware. It's nothing to worry about. Exercise helps disputes the build up. Marigold and cleavers/clovers help loads. It will get in the system faster if you soak the herbs in hot water then top the lot into the feed. Those of you using Hilton herbs..... It may work out cheaper to buy the webs yourself and give 15g of each daily. I buy from Pegasus health.
