Bit of a story here. Got horse on trial. totally fell in love with her. Got her vetted and failed. bought different horse but still lusted after original one. hubbie bought bocketty original mare as christmas present. She is only 3yr old.

She failed the vetting on her action. She was sound - has never been lame since current owners have had her. Vet thought she had very weak hocks. only want her as a hack so took the risk.

She is still with current owners while we are sorting out her field and they had a chiropractor come look at her. He said that its not her hocks although she doesn't have great confirmation, but he said it was an old injury in her hamstrings. Apparently there is a lump of scar tisssue there and thats whats causing the funny action. He worked it and said she needed massage regularly but wasn't all that concerned.

Anyone have any ideas of how this will impact her or any schooling to avoid/ introduce etc. i.e. should I do road work with her or should that be avoided etc.

Any oppinions would be great.

thanks

We have had a horse in with a hamstring injury with a fair amount of muscle wastage. After rest and physio we did a lot of slow work, hacking and lots of straight lines to build up the hindquarters - checking regularly for even build up as 1 side was definately weaker than the other.

I would recommend regular checks with physio and never proceed to fast with building work up.

my mare pulled her hamstring last year. The muscle wastage was quite quick and she had a large knot of scar tissue. It has been very hard to heal. She has never really been lame on it, just had a very funny action in walk where she flicked the foot upwards before putting it down and it looked very 'stilted'. I have been unable to ride her because funny walk it put alot of pressure on her back muscles so it was uncomfortable for her. It has been 18 months now and I have just started to walk her out and hopefully will be able to build her up again.
Thare is still quite a dent in the muscle and it is still pretty solid, but hope fully with gentle stretching exercise it will get a bit better

Thanks for your response. the mare has been ridden - only recently broken so was in quite intensive daily work for the passed 4 months and has shown no ill affects. she does the same thing as you describe when she walks but its generally only for about 2 or three steps and then she is fine. I really don't mind the action looking strange as long as she is not in any pain - hence the chiropractor been called in. he felt she would be fine with some massage to loosen the knot of scar tissue. It is not going to go away but like I said, as long as she is not in any pain or discomfort I am happy enough with her.....

She just got her wolf teeth out today so she loves me at the moment!! (NOT!!!)

hi i have a mare that has pulled both her hamstrings im guessing a couple years ago as the owner before me owned her 2 years and i have owned her a year. she walks stiff in the back leggs and when you run your hands down her hams its really tight i dont feel any knots or anything. im trying to sale her but everyone is scared of the leg problem even thought i ride her up in the hills trail riding all day and she has never been sore or lame. do you have any suggestens on what i should do in order to show people she is fine and can be used? thanks
