$deity knows how he did it, but my little monkey managed to pull his shoe whilst in his stable ( hes on box rest+controlled exercise ) and from the looks of it, ie the nails arent bent back - hes stepped on it.

No heat at first, however this afternoon heat developed on the inner side of the hoof, so cleaned out and soaked his hoof in epsom salts for 15 mins. Had a bit of a look and found that some of his frog had come off a bit and i also found a bruise on his heel bulb, same side as the heat. No obvious signs of a puncture though.

He isnt lame on it, but didnt like me fiddling with it either.

Have poulticed it and left a message for the farrier. If he has punctured it what is the prognosis for healing time? Also what other signs should i look for? How long until he can have a shoe back on?

if it is just a bruise, i will try to continue his exercise as its only walking in the manege at present.

He is just coming back into work after some time off and i am worried about having to start his exercise regime all over again.

Thanks to anyone who may be able to help.

Mine did this, but punctured so I had to call the vet. I would say poultice was right, I'd get farrier to look asap. Shouldn't set you back too far. Hope it goes well.

thanks so much for replying..

ifyou dont mind can you tell me the signs you saw that it was punctured? i have had a good look and cant see any holes but im worried i am missing something. Was your horse lame?

if he trod on it he prob needs a course of antibiotics because puncture wounds are the worst... it's likely he'll get an abscess. no way of knowing until the heat and pressure build up and horse can't put foot to the ground, usually. i'd talk to your vet.

My horse pulled his shoe half off and then trod on the clip, at about the furthest point from home on a hack!
His foot started to bleed where he'd trodden on the clip and everytime he put his foot down as he'd twisted the shoe he trod on it again!
Luckily a nice farmer came past and he pulled it off for us (cue me closing my eyes and hoping to god he didn't also pull half the hoof off!) and we walked home - by the time I got home my lovely farrier was already there and waiting for me, we washed it out had a good prod about and he checked it - told me not to be silly as i'd said about possibility of bleeding/bruising etc and banged it back on!! I gave him hte next 2 days off and he was absolutely fine

farrier came today, checked it out thoroughly, says that other than the bruise on the heel its all good. hes still not lame and not as much heat as yesterday so we may have been lucky this time?

Ill definitely get the vet if he goes lame or the head gets worse, but i would have thought a farrier would be better to diagnose a puncture than a vet? Please feel free to correct me if im wrong.

mine did it not long ago- infact she went through a spell of it, but no serious effects- just used hydrogen peroxide on it and then left it. It did develop into gravel [pus in the foot- i think gravel is a yorkshire term!] once, but just poulticed and it was fine. And yeah- anything foot related I usually call the farrier first!

total muppets sometimes arent they! its still a mystery how he managed it too - hes never, ever thrown a shoe and he was only shod two weeks ago! plus hes hardly been out of his box in 3 months - methinks he must have been having a party in there!

love my farrier though, was out to check it out within 24 hours of me letting me know.

Did his exercise tonight and he was fine. Theres still a little heat on the inner hoof wall close to the heel, but i think thats because of the bruise.

oh i am glad it is only bruised and nothing else. give some arnica for the brusing that will help draw the bruise and heal quicker!
