I was just wondering how you all got your horses tails looking neat and tidy?

Grace won't let me pull hers, she gets quite annoyed with me and seems really sensitive. So I bought one of those rakes that you can use on their manes and tails. It is great for giving her thin mane a shortening, but it doesn't give me a close enough look for me and was wondering how others got theirs so neat at the sides

I bought a tail trimmer and it rakes the excess hair out and leaves my boys tail looking really nice as he too will not let me pull his tail without kicking me into next week.
I was a tad unsure of them when they came onto the market but if you buy a decent one they do a nice job without leaving it looking like its been savaged by an angry blind man with sharp scissors.
I think you need to buy the relative trimmer for the look you want ie fine, medium, course and as far as I'm aware there are mane trimmers and tail trimmers as seperate.
Hope this helps!

i know you really shouldn't do this but my friend uses the clippers on the sides of her horses tail-surprisingly it looks really good!

Jeez. I'm desperately trying to grow Star's tail out after someone did this to her before I bought her. It looks hideous, don't do it!

Use an old clipper blade to nip the hair down the side of her dock short and then neaten the ones ontop if she wont let you pull it. Scissors if done properly can give a pulled effect but really have to be kept on top of for a neat looking tail otherwise they look like loo brushes!!

I am afraid I resort to clipping to sides of the tail. So long as you only do the sides and leave the top untouched they look Ok. You have to do it every couple of weeks though. I believe it's banned in germany.

either clipper blades or thoese funny purple muzzle hair remover thingummies

they work a treat - just run them down the sides for a pulled, tidy look, and be as shorrt as you loike and easy to grade for differnt areas of the tail

I use the clippers to take the bulk off when I've left it too long, but then I go over it with one of those shaving razors that are made for horses (ie have little bars across the blade to stop you going too close). Their tails always look really smart.

Someone once pulled my horses tail for me and it looked like a loo brush!

I went through this exact situation last week

P's tail was pulled all summer while he was showing, so come last week it was startinf to grow out and resemble a loo brush. YO gave me a lend of her tail rake and i have to say I love it. It was so easy to use and P didnt even bat an eyelid (he is not great when getting his tail pulled

) For the past few days I have applied a damp tail bandage for a few hours and now its back looking super

I use the razors too. If it's got a bit long then I use the scissors first to just rid of some of the bulk at the sides and then run the razors a long either side to give it a more 'finished' look, also I run the razors down the front so that it looks more pulled. I've got handy with a razor!!
Someone from my yard commented how nice my 'pulled' tail was and now it didn't look as severe as some!!

Which tail rake have you got? If the tail isnt looking tidy enough then it suggests that you need a finer one. Clippersharp do a 'Super Fine' tail rake which gets really close.

oil of cloves applied to the dock (whilst your wearing gloves, otherwise you end up with numb fingers). numbs the dock so the horse cant feel a thing, then do it little and often. I take up to 2 weeks to pull one of my lots tails, the other will go to sleep whilst doing his so he gets his done in one or 2 session,
