I've heard of people doing this. I can't pull it properly, and the rake didn't really work, not sure if I got it too wide or not. Anyway, this is what the bog brush looks like at the mo....

Do you think thinning scissors would do the job? If so, how do I do it?

Have had a couple of people telling me not to pull his tail, but need to for showing really, and I prefer pulled tails.

Cheers x

What classes do you do?

Get yourself a tail rake - they are fantastic, will reduce the bog brush effect - then when you have raked away trim the edges, very carefully - do NOT hack, you are thinning in an upwards angle!!

Before a class gel the tail well and bandage, I would also put as many plaits in the main part of the tail and then plait them up the night before a show - when you brush it out it will give the lower part a much fuller look and draw the eye away from the thicker part at the top.

I think it would be virtually impossible to get a good result with thinning scissors - why can't you pull it will horse not let you? If so have you tried sedating him/her?
Pulled our WHP's tail at weekend and it was worse than yours when I started out - took just over an hour to do.

Ridden hunter, working hunter, riding club horse. Got a tail rake but it doesn't seem to do much at all, I tried a tail rake on that and thats what it ended up like!

Maybe your rake is not sharp enough or the right type as you can do a half reasonable job with a rake. If you were feeling brave enough pulling is by far the best option and is really quite easy - take only from the sides to start with, don't go any lower than you want to (obviously) and once the sides are out just thin the middle to your own liking. Doesn't matter if you bald the sides a little bit - they soon grow back & if you look at top producer's ponies/horses I guarantee you will see baldy sides so you can't really pull too much out!!
Use pliers & take only a few hairs at a time to start with - most horses will tolerate it as long as you don't rive great handfuls out in one go.

Hi, the absolute best product that i have ever use on my show cob is Smart Manes and Tails Comb available from Stortford Saddlery (enter their name in ebay community). I use the coarse blade to start with and then tidy with the fine. I have actually been stopped whilst hacking for horsey people to compliment me on my boy's tail! It really is superb and doesnt hurt the horse one bit. Try it!
