Thanks

I use a mane/tail rake instead of pulling the tail. It gives the same effect as a pulled tail without putting the horse through the discomfort. Its not so good on a mane as leaves a bog brush effect, but tails its great. I got mine from derby house.

Another vote for the tail rake...

I pulled for the first time last year. I think it looks smarter for competitions & saves plaiting & unplaiting which is fab.

If you havent pulled a tail before, i would definately get someone to do it for you first... i would rather see a tail left naturally than a badly pulled or even worse CLIPPED tail!

My horse used to have a "natural shaped" tail and they would plait it for the competition,i cant pull or plait a tail to save my life so the groom had to do it

Get someone to show you or have a very good look at one that is done properly and do a tiny bit at a time. I have pulled and also used a tail rake.

To be honest, tail rake is very good unless you were showing at high level, and even them if done carefully looks almost as good.

If you can plait I would do that, but I can plait manes but am not good at tails, hence the pulled tail for me. If you are showing then I would personally go for the pulled look - more correct than plaiting.

I'm afraid I'm going to go against the grain here... I much prefer full tails. But I've always had no problem with plaiting tails and quite enjoy it so that's probably the main motivation. Plus I think a plaited tail looks lovely. The other advantage to a full tail is it keeps their bottom a bit warmer in the wind.

But yeah, I think if you've not got the knack fo plaiting pulling is the best option, just get someone to show you or help first time as badly pulled tails look so messy.

Thanks for all the advice ... think i might just leave it then, as i can do a very tidy tail plait.. and id rather not mess it up!
maybe ill practise on my mums hacker lol ...

Tail rake for cobs, and cob types just brill, does nothing for my TB, glides over silky soft tails, a v famous cob producer used a rake on my riding horse's 'perfect' propery pulled tail tail and it look me months to get it right again. But it does take the weight out of the middle....a little tip a picked up from a hunt groom - those tiny hairs at the side you just can't grab? bull nosed plyers when back from a ride.....sounds victorian but it works!
