Hi everyone

I've just bought a 6 year old 16hh mare and she's been great (apart from bucking me off the other day - but that's a whole different story!) I've bought her to do a bit of everything with really.

She has a great jump in her but does go too fast and pull forward and down as she lands, which will become a problem when trying to do a course. She is a bit babyish in other ways as well and does need all round work!

When I went to see her the owner immediately said that she would 'have to be put in a gag if i wanted to try her over a jump' I had my mum with me who said that we would prefer to try her in a snaffle. (having a riding instructor mum i do get a lot of 'she'll be fine just throw her on' kind of thing :D) Anyway we got on fine jumping in the snaffle apart from the pulling and I bought her home the next day!

I've got her in a loose ring french link now and she seems happy in her mouth so I think we will stick with that. I wondered if anyone had any schooling exercises that I can do with her? I've arranged to have regular lessons with her. I know that I need to do a lot of flatwork to start with to help, but what kind of jumping exercises would you suggest? Or no jumping at all until her flatwork improves maybe?

Any thoughts or ideas will be a great help, thanks! :)

Friends horse was doing that. We videoed and decided he was actually over bitted so friend reduced bitting. She tried releasing him fully over the fence and he knocked it down, then tried a light but firm contact and solved the problem. Equally I had an older horse who would do that and did need a gag to keep him up!
