Hi, I am getting a fell x appoloosa who is only 4 and he was used for showing so has a longish natural mane. His mane isn't that thick though. I am wanting to show jump him so he is getting pulled! Any tips of where to start with a long mane.

If it is thin then cut it to almost the correct length then pull it to level and neaten the ends that way you don't end up with it too thin or have a battle trying to pull out loads in one go.

do it after working so that the pores are open and less painful if you really have to pull.

Interesting that because your SJ you need to pull?

Okay thanks everyone, can't say I'm a fan of pulling so I will have a go with scissors first.

And interesting? I would prefer my horse to be pulled as it is easier to deal with and doesn't get caught in the reins while showjumping. I also think it looks tidier, but that's just my opinion!!

Yes what nikkimariet said. It is really easy to do a tidy job with scissors if you just practice. I cut the mane straight across until it is fractionally longer than I want it, then cut upwards into it like hairdressers do when they put layers in your hair. It gets rid of the blunt edge and is pain free for everyone. Much better for a thin mane, too :)

I cut mine with scissors (gasp) to about half an inch below where I want it to drop to and then use one of those combs with a razor IMAGE HERE http://www.bing.com/images/search?q...f599da1e945419d42ffbe10b3d805ao0&mode=overlay

and do it like that. It looks really neat and tidy. It doesn't hurt them as it cuts rather than pulls.

So in answer to your question, it your horse's mane isn't that thick it would be better to do it with a razor comb so you are not loosing bulk only the tips of the hair to get the desired length.

I can't get on with solocombs although they do a similar thing.
