Hunt my boy and today he pulled like a train still had control I have him in a tom thumb but wondered what I could put in for more brakes any ideas he is a cob so stocky !! thanks.
Try a Pelham with longer shanks- my old cob has 6" cheeks on his so i can ride with a very light contact until he tanks or if your cob is overbending as many cobs do then try a 3 ring gag snaffle but- top tip- put an old flash strap or similar between the 2 top (cheekpiece) rings at the back as it gives you some high curb style action. I have a mega mega strong younger cob and i have just started using a cheltenham gag (as used by polo ponies) on the recommendation of my EDS as he overbends and locks his neck solid-well so far so good....
I have just put my tank in a american gag with a kineton noseband and touch wood it seems to be okish!!He was in a rugby pelham and i lent him to the whip to hunt and he took off with her and jumped a gate,so thought it was probably best to sort out his brakes!!

I have had great success with two bits, one a long shank Myler combination and the other was a Military Reversible. The MR was extremely effective with enthusiastic hunters.
I ride my cob in a pelham with two reins. Normally I ride with the snaffle rein and leave the curb rein in a knot and only use it when I know she will get strong, ie galloping with others or jumping. She goes really nicely in it, and I also use it for showing. She is very disrespectful of any other bit!
