pulling like mad-help!!!

Right, here we go-long story!
I have a lovely bLACK LAB WHO CAME TO US NEARLY A year ago- he was found wandering the street and nobody came forward for him. He looks to be around 18 months or so. He is such a lovely dog, so friendly and great with the kids. He is even so gently with our tiny chihuahua who is smaller than the cat!

Big issue is his recall is so bad I cant let him off lead- he recalls beautifully in the garden or on a 100ft leasd line but soon as he is off-whoosh!!! Especially if another dog is around-have tried whistle/treats/etc etc!

Also he is energetic, he is walked twice daily and has a run on his 100ft line which he manages to get quite a good run on, but pulls like a train on the lead. Now believe me i have tried almost every method in the book from treats, changing pace/direction etc etc and every gadget including a tweeter/choke chain/halti/lupi harness/variety of harnesses and a leather dogmatic. He pulls through anything. Now im not after some bright spark to tell me i dont need gadgets just to train-in an ideal world yes but i have 2 children, one of which a baby and a prolapsed disc in my soine making it hard for me to walk him. either i find something i can hold him in or he gets walkjed less which is not what he nor i want.

He has developed this leaqd agression where he lunges at other dogs so purchased a spray thing which is great if i time it right. I have signed us up for dog classes as i dont believe he was socialized properly as a pup. but can anyone please recopmmend something so that i can gain control in the first place before we can work on anything else! he is such a lovely dog and i will never give up on him like someone else did!

I tried the Lupi and it was as much use as a chocolate teapot!

If you tried a choke chain or slip lead and it didn't work, then I won't ding on about it - just to ask what type of chain (thickness etc) and with what type of lead?
And how much/of what type of walking, if that makes any sense?
For instance, you could mix it up a little, take him somewhere where he could swim for longer periods, try him with agility.

Someone on here recommended a Mentuki harness the other day? Never heard of them though.

Don't lose heart, any training can take time, a year can pass so quickly, I know!

Training classes is a good idea, a fresh pair of eyes can make all the difference. Also - if he gets a 'job' - obedience, agility, etc, that might take the edge off his energy and pulling, I have certainly found that.

Also - completely forgot to say this, remembered out on my walk today while my female was being a bit rude on the lead - lots of directional changes, and turning right round and going back on yourself also helps. You may end up looking like a bit of a wally during walks but it is worth a try in terms of training the dog not to pull - dog learns that pulling doesn't get them any further forward - and in fact, quite the opposite!
My mother also used to start walking backwards or just stop altogether and wouldn't walk forwards until the lead went slack.
Keep it all very lively and fluid, don't give warning or room to move - just turn and bring the dog with you.
