I really need to pull my horses mane it's really long starggly and horrible ( he's a TB)

I have tried it a few times and he gets really naughty, either tries to stand on me , squash me or bite. This is really out of character for him and this is the first time I have had to do it since I got him so I don't know if he has maybe had a bad experience before ?

Anyway there isn't really anyone I around to help me. So was wondering if I should give him an instant calmer and or twitch or use sedalin ??

Or anyother ideas you may have ??

I have a welsh C that hates her mane pulled, tramples you and tries to kick and bite - I just bung on a twitch, it then takes me a matter of minutes to tidy her mane up...

Why not use a solo comb or rake. Cut it first and then snip into it before using the solo comb or rake to give a more natural 'pulled' look. Better than getting squashed or resorting to the twitch.

have you tried using a mane rake? you brush the mane on the wrong side, then just drag the rake through, it is a humane way of doing it, and then you can just use a thining knife to tidy up the ends and as you are not "pulling" the mane you shouldnt need a twitch,

pm me if you want more details

I have a solocomeb, but I just cut it with scissors (argh! I know) and then trim with the solocombe the bottom to make it look natural. My mare hates having her mane pulled, so that's why I do it. Doesn't look as though I have cut her mane either which is good, not like those SJ's you see.

Edited to say, I very gently brush some main up and cut that too, like using the solocombe but being able to grap more mane than the solo can handle, I do that a bit too to thin it out.

I have the same problem! Mine goes to the extent of rearing up to get away

I cant even use solo combs on him as the hurt apparently lol so now i just use thinning scissors (which he still tries to escape) takes 2 people to do this lol.

Thanks Guys at least now I dont feel like an idiot knowing other horses do it !!!

I can just about brush it with a plastic curry comb and have tried the solo combs etc lasts for about five minutes !!

I will try twitching

Sedalin went no-where near my one who hated his mane being pulled, the only way I could get near him was either full on IV sedation or twitching - the old style twitch, not the humane sort. He had his teeth done 2x a year by the vet under sedation so he got his mane pulled very short at the same time...

I rub clove oil into the base of my mare's mane (wear gloves for this) as it numbs it a bit then I pull it. She gets a bit naughty for a section of it but stands for the rest of it

Twitching for cosmetic reasons... is it really fair to use a horse's pain response to do something else painful to it just so we can feel it looks nicer? Hmmm...

my mare hate having her mane pulled, I try to be very patient and keep on top of it so it never gets too long, I do it little and often with PLENTY of treat!
