Axel loses a front shoe nearly every 2 weeks, the farrier thinks he is probably standing on the back of them with his hind feet and advised me to turn him out with over-reach boots on. He also said it was beacause he is young and will grow out of it!
He is shod every 6 weeks and is due next monday but pulled a shoe off yesterday while I was riding and this was the one that was only put back on 2 weeks ago!

I'm wondering if feeding him a supplement to strengthen his feet would work?
Any suggestions as to which one?

Thanks

Mine does that too. He doesnt have bad feet, but still drags shoes off on a regular basis! Feed him Biotin, and using Keratex helps too,and has stopped them coming off so regularly. Also gets shod every 5wks max. But generally, if they are going to do it, they just carry on doing it! Over reaches are the only things that help TBH.

I started mine on Farriers Formula this Summer & it really seems to be working - & I am the biggest sceptic of supplements! Farrier says that the quality has really improved. My horse has truly awful hooves & the farrier said they actually look good (first time anyone has said that!). You have to give it a good six months to a year to see it working.

Thanks, its nice to know I'm not alone!!
Axel doesn't have bad feet at all, and literally seems to just 'step out' of his shoes. He doesn't have hind shoes on as I don't do a lot of road work and I thought it would probably make him pull his fronts off even more.

Will go and get some biotin tomorrow, and some keratex, is it the hoof hardener you use?
Will speak to farrier about coming every 5 weeks I think!

Thanks again

Lol! My boy was EXACTLY the same. He is growing out of it slowly, but find he is worse in the extremes of weather, so either when ground is hard and dry, or seriously boggy!! Yes I use the Keratex hardener, just around the nail holes.
IS Axel your chestnut? He is stunning.

The hoof & nail hole disinfectant is very good also - squirt into nail holes & it strengthens the structure where it has been weakened by the nails - keeps any infection & dirt out so structure of hoof is stronger.

if he's standing on his front and pulling it off - could you use some over-reach boots to prevent him? even with strong feet if they stand on their shoes they will pull or twist them anyway.

thanks vicijp, he's just had his back looked at and the dentist is coming soon.
The trouble is that he has such a massive overtrack I don't think his front feet get out of the way in time lol!

Will ask the farrier tomorrow about some lighter shoes
