We have always struggled keeping Tobys shoes on. When we first had him he would loose one after about 2 weeks if not sooner sometimes. We always thought it must be him over-reaching and as he had good feet we decided to go bare foot, which has siuted him well up untill now.
4 weeks ago we had fronts put back on as he has started heavier work and some road work and has managed to keep them on so far *touch wood* but today i saw him lying down in the paddock and he was biting his shoes and pulling! Do you think this is prob just an itch or could this be the reason he used to loose them so often? He would always loose fronts.

I walked into my girl's box one day and there she was lying down grabbing her shoe between her teeth, took me aback and made me laugh so much (it looked so cute as she had this really petulent look on her face as if to say 'what are these? So not my style. Get them off!') forgot to tell her to stop!

She used to lose front shoes a lot but that was because she was underdeveloped at the back, after her hindquarters built up and she started walking properly the shoes began to stay on, not becuase she had been munching them overnight!

You don't by any chance have sheep fencing do you? Mine likes to pull his off on sheep fences (well, more like he enjoys scoffing from the other side and gets his shoes caught). Electric fencing round the inside helps!!

mine liked putting his leg through post and rail and dragging his leg back through catching the shoe on the fence and pulling it off. hes got straight bar shoes on now so has to wear over reach boots 24/7 but they are on loose so they flop around and dont rub him, hes got very thin senstive tb skin and so far *touch wood* they have not rubbed him and hes had them on for 10 weeks now. never heard of a horse pulling it off with their teeth.

We had an old horse who used to deliberatly pull her shoes off in the fencing. She was very very good at it  So eventually after trying everything to stop her and keep them on, she got what she wanted and went barefoot. Happiest we ever saw her!

Perhaps he's trying to tell you he doesn't want them on!!!

Take them off and buy him some hoofboots instead; no reason why if he's got good feet he can't do roadwork barefoot; You just need to build up gradually.

A horse at my yard did this on the 5-bar gate yesterday. YO (who also owns him) was not amused!

Mine used to stand on his own feet to pull them off - bell boots on all 4 for turnout now, and no lost shoes for almost 18 months :-) they don't rub him either, unlike rubber over-reach boots

My mare pulled her front shoe off on the old stable hinge just as the farrier was loading up his tools to go! I watched as she popped her hoof behind it, gave it a twist and off it came like a top off a beer bottle, very skilled, clean and quick. My farrier nearly choked as he saw it too.

She's now completely barefoot and loving it!!

Mine recently pulled off a back shoe, it had only been on for two weeks and he managed to leave the shoe with a lovely twist in it, luckily he didnt damage the hoof wall.
