Just wondering what cc engine would be needed to pull an ifor williams x2 16.2hh horse trailer with a middle weight 14.3 welshy in the back. Would a 1700cc engine be able to pull this?? Thanks to all you knowledgable people! - im useless with this sort of stuff!!!

You need to go on the weight of the vehicle and the towing capacity. I put a post on similar to this a while ago - I don't know if you can search for it. I got a lot of useful advice! I think the recommendations from the caravan club are tow 85% of the kerbweight of your car. However, you can legally tow up to the towing capacity of your vehicle (i think!). IW trailer weighs about 850kg i think - check on their website.

You really need to know what the towing capability of your vehicle is not the engin size.

The problem you have is that your vehicle may be physicaly capable off pulling the trailer though it may not be legaly allowed to do so. e.g Audi tt 2.0, big engine light weight, you really dont see them pulling many caravans or horse trailers. Besides ever tried to get a saddle and some passangers in one :p

Your local car dealer for your vehicle make should be able to tell you this.

If you jolt the trailer you can do massive damage to a cars chassis. And worst part about that is you would never know. Unless the car started handling badly.

I wouldn't want less than 2.5 ltr egine size, plus whatever towing capacity the vehicle is. The smaller the engine, the harder it would have to work (and quicker it would wear out), I'd imagine.

I pull a small Bateson - 670 k with one cob - 460 with a 2 litre TD - it manages fine but I would not want to have a lot more weight to pull on steep hills, even if my car was heavier.

Think a 1700 would have a big problem pulling what you propose, especially if the vehicle was heavy enough for the job.

Does go on weight of car and weather the trailer is braked or not(ifor williams generally are, mine is). You should also think about what ground you are going to tow on. Where I am some shows I go to are on sandy and slippery ground so I had to buy a 4x4. I dont even know I have the trailer on the back with my grand jeep cheokee, although I did have to convert it to run on gas, it was too expensive to run as it is a 4.7 petrol. would rather have an audi TT though.

Audi TTs are lovely - on paper far better than my tow car, which is not as heavy, 4 x 4, traction control and very powerful.

However, my OH has one and I would not dream of towing with it - far too low for a start and too pretty. Thats why I love my Primera - ugly and covered in poo, but a great car for stables and towing a small cob in a very LW trailer.
